Although her writing includes elements of memoir, psycho-analysis, history, and forensic psychology, her most consistent focus is the reconsideration and interrogation of the true crime genre. Dr. Brottman has been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Indiana University, and Director of the Humanities Program at the Pacifica Graduate Institute. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Humanistic Studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art in downtown Baltimore, where she teaches courses in literature, critical studies, and myth. Dr. Brottman is also a psychoanalyst certified since 2012 through the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NCPsycA). She does volunteer work in the Maryland prison system and in forensic psychiatric facilities.
