Opioid addiction has reached crisis levels in the US and has taken hold, no city or small town is untouched. Emergency rooms across the nation are seeing more and more patients, some resulting in death, from street drugs as well as those prescribed. Dr. Gregor Shangold, an emergency room physician in Hartford, CT joins Shattered Lives to explore this crisis, expose some of the myths, and offer evidence based solutions. Not only does opioid use affect the addict and their families, but trickles down into many levels of the community.  Dr. Gregory Shangold is an emergency medicine doctor in Connecticut and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Hartford Hospital and Windham Hospital.  In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Shangold has been involved in organized medicine through many organizations.  He has worked on many important issues facing physicians over the years including ED overcrowding, physician liability issues and other matters affecting physicians and patients.

Police Dept. shares information to bring in clues and tips to bring answers to families who are waiting. 1-      Zackary Malinowski – Case # 13-080348 - 19 y/o male went missing on 8/25/2013 somewhere between Conway and Aynor SC, his vehicle was found burned on Valley Forge Rd in Aynor on September 2, 2013 2-      Randy Davis – Case # 16-006487 - 25 y/o male went missing on 1/26/2016 from a home n Marshland Circle in Aynor SC, his remains were found in a remote wooded area off of Horsepen Bay Rd in Aynor on May 10, 2017, less than a mile from where he went missing. 3-      David Mino – Case # 11-080379 – 47 y/o male went missing July 8 or 10, 2011 his remains were found on December 28, 2013 in a wooded area next to railroad tracks off Tidewater Rd in Myrtle Beach SC  

Guest James Lilley talks about the 1992 carjacking murder of Dr. Pam Basu and the impact of the crime globally. On Sept. 8, 1992, the Maryland mother was taking her 2-year-old daughter to her first day of nursery school when two men pulled her from her car. Struggling to rescue her daughter, Basu became entangled in a seat belt and was dragged to her death. The brutal crime received world-wide publicity, led to federal anti-carjacking legislation and continues to be cited in reference and legal books.

Since her daughter Brittany Phillips' murder in 2004, Maggie Zingman has traveled the country on the Caravan to Catch a Killer.  On October 1, 2004 a friend found Brittany dead in her East Tulsa apartment. Investigators said the killer raped and suffocated her. Detectives collected DNA from the crime scene and have since run over 3,000 samples in Oklahoma. Currently they are looking at one specific person, but the case remains unsolved. "I know finding her killer is not going to bring closure, but I want to feel like at least I stopped him from killing other people," Zingman said. Since Brittany's death, Zingman has found a way to keep her daughter's spirit alive. She travels across the country in what she calls "A Caravan to Catch a Killer." She shares Brittany's story and educates others about the benefits of DNA swabbing people under arrest.

2001 is the year Americans will always remember, especially 9-11. However, tragedy struck months before when Hofstra honor student, Max Kolb lost his life to a fellow student. Missing for several weeks, his mutilated boday was found in a shallow grave near the oceanfront apartment of Shaun Alexander. The Friends of Max Kolb telethon, an annual showcase produced by Hofstra University students in memory of Kolb, aired for the sixteenth and final time recently.  Laura Fu, a 2002 Hofstra graduate and a close friend of Kolb’s, started the telethon in 2002 to raise money for the school’s film students.

In 1986, sixteen-year-old Cheryl Pierson hired a classmate to kill her father. James Pierson began abusing Cheryl from the time she was only eleven. Her invalid mother died when Cheryl was fifteen, and even though she was a child herself, she assumed responsibility for keeping house for the family, including cooking, cleaning and laundry. She also took over raising her younger sister,  was made to satisfy her father’s enormous sexual appetite, and expected to do well in school. He kept her on a short leash as she got older because he wanted her for himself. Then her father threatened to transfer his sexual desires to her eight-year-old sister Joann. On today's episode we will discuss the media bias in cases of missing adult men with the mother of missing Damien Sharp. Why is it so difficult to get media attention for missing males? Janeane Shanahan's son, Damien, was 22 when he was last seen in Warren, PA during Memorial Day weekend in 2002. According to a police report, Sharp was last seen carrying a black backpack and was possibly using aluminum crutches, and wearing a dark shirt and dark shorts.

19-year-old Tanner Barton, passed away unexpectedly while at his friend’s house. Today, his death remains unresolved, and the questions his mother still has span 32 pages. Michelle Barton, Tanner's mother joins this episode still searching for clues about what happened on the night of October 17, 2012 as well as the discrepancies in the stories his friends tell about it.

Patrick J. Atkinson, founder and President of ITEMP, is also the founder and international executive director of The GOD’S CHILD Project and several other associated charities in the United States, Central America and Africa.
