Shumway discussed his passion for histories of love, the family, and gender, and how that led to his first book, The Case of the Ugly Suitor and Other Histories of Love, Gender, & Nation in Buenos Aires, 1776-1870. The two then transitioned to explore Shumway’s latest book, A Woman, a Man, a Nation: Mariquita Sánchez, Juan Manuel de Rosas, and the Beginnings of Argentina. They also search for the best possible writing conditions – concluding that escaping to the middle of the Pacific for long stretches of time isn’t a bad strategy.
