Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...however, in practice there seems to be something within the fine print of our democracy that isn't allowing all citizens to experience these stated ideals. Where Do I Turn? Sexuality Education and Abortion Access in Indiana
26/10/2017 Duration: 52minHash It Out returns with an episode dedicated to thinking critically about sexuality education, abortion access, and how different populations can get the information they deserve. For non-normative populations, like queer people or trans folk, it can be hard to get medically accurate information. Doctors are legally required to provide false information to patients seeking abortions and most schools don’t mandate sexuality education at all. Courtney and Judith discuss these issues and also provide suggestions for places to find resources, which you can also find in the recommended reading document below. As usual, we prepared a list of resources we consulted, plus some background reading and further research you could do to understand the issue more thoroughly. Check the link here: https://goo.gl/k9KgRt Thanks for tuning in! Check back on November 10th for our next episode, and continue the conversation on our Facebook page “Social Justice Education (IUPUI),” on Twitter and Instagram @sjed_iupui, or using

Culture is Not a Costume
13/10/2017 Duration: 48minThis week’s episode of Hash it Out, “Culture is Not a Costume,” will help you navigate some of the tricky issues associated with the upcoming Halloween holiday (and all of the Pocahottie and sombrero costumes that come along with it.) Cultural appropriation is usually treated as a 101-level topic and the conversation ends there. There’s plenty of reading you can do on what defines appropriation and who can and can’t wear certain items or partake in certain rituals. But Judith and Courtney tackle the topic from a different angle, taking it beyond the 101 course and into a more nuanced discussion. Can you appropriate cultures by eating certain foods? Are fashion and art exempt from cultural appropriation? What’s even that harmful about wearing a keffiyeh, posing in a wheelchair, or tacking a bindi to your forehead for a photoshoot? Can non-White people appropriate from other races? We confront all of these issues and more. As usual, we prepared a list of resources we consulted, plus some background reading a

Discrimination in the Doctor's Office
29/09/2017 Duration: 38minWelcome back to Hash it Out! We're excited to bring our first full content episode to your headphones. We talk a lot about how health care and reproductive justice are connected and how doctors can prevent or allow people to access the care they want or need. Most often, the focus is on abortion. But what about the other types of reproductive justice, like access to gender confirming therapies, the right to determine your care, and informed consent? Join us for a discussion about the doctor's role in maintaining autonomy and dignity in reproductive justice. But of course, we can't address everything in one episode. What did we miss? We challenge you to continue the conversation from here. You can find us on Twitter @sjed_iupui, Facebook at "Social Justice Education (IUPUI)", or use our hashtag, #HashitOutIUPUI. We look forward to hearing from you! Here are some resources we consulted for this episode and other things you can read about for further information: https://goo.gl/opAiBc Acknowledgements to th
