Episode 24 of the Hauntingly Beautiful Podcast is a double feature! Where has the time gone? My guests, Andrew and Victoria DeSanctis open the episode by discussing this very topic. This artistic power couple has been together for nine years and married for over two. Andrew works in production and is the guitarist for the Erie-local, symphonic death metal band, Perdition. Victoria is an alternative makeup artist and vlogger. Throughout the episode, the couple explains the evolution of the passion for their crafts and the darker side of things into elaborate performance art that fosters strong connections between people who tend to live “against the grain.” Later, both artists discuss their inspiration and what makes their styles individual from those who aren’t so fond of the dark side. In addition, they explain the practices that allow them to work well together, as creators and as significant others. Hauntingly Beautiful Episode 20 welcomes my longtime friend, Todd Bailey, aka Pol-skeet-skeet! Todd is a photo journalist, originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, but currently residing in the “deep south” of Austin, Texas. We open the episode discussing the motivational support we have provided for one another from the beginning and even now that we are 1,500 miles apart. We explore how Todd became interested in working in news rather than in software engineering, and how he got his first job in the field. After we contemplate when a trusty Pennsylvania beer might finally reach Austin, Todd explains some of the expenses involved in filming, the differences between local and national news, and what lengths he must go to cover a story adequately. As we are approaching the end of Hauntingly Beautiful’s teenage years, we welcome Doug Baker for Episode 19! Although we start this episode bonding over our fond memories of the former local skatepark “Shebang,” our friendship started much more recently with my filming of the documentary of his life thus far, “The Perfect Storm.” Doug’s life has had as many ups and downs as a motocross track, many developing from his interest in, you guessed it, motocross. We explore the weighted decisions he was forced to make at a young age, his resilience during a lifechanging accident involving his father, and his growth despite, and maybe as a result of, a couple major accidents of his own. Finally, we discuss the importance of inner strength and appreciating the little things (and people) in life as Doug explains how his last accident changed the way he ultimately plans to live his life.
