Not Just African

In part 2 of Coming to America, the discussion continues with my guests which are my two sisters Ihuoma and Ogechi, and our friend Cheryl. Hilarity ensues as we recount just a few of the many struggles our families have endured as immigrants, and we part with some words of advice to our Native, European and African American friends and neighbors.

DeeDee describes growing up in Zimbabwe as a 'colored' young woman with Shona, Ndebele, Guyanese, and European ancestry. Our discussion ranges from the discovery and acceptance of her identity as neither black nor white, and what land re-distribution in Zimbabwe and possibly South Africa means to her as a colored woman whose family owns farms in her homeland.

The first interview of International Women's History Month is with Cheryl who chronicles her journey growing up as a young African girl in a predominantly African American and Hispanic neighborhood in L.A., and the changes she made to fit in with her peers. 

Enyioma and her siblings have an animated discussion about the meaning of their names and the importance of cultural preservation.
