This week we are fortunate to speak with Joy Owens, the Education Manager from the Elephant Sanctuary from Tennessee. Since 1995, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has provided elephants retired from performance and exhibition with a safe refuge and the companionship of other elephants. The facility has grown from 110 acres to 2,700 acres and has provided sanctuary to 27 elephants, making it North America's largest natural habitat refuge for captive elephants. This week we revisit the African Elephant. Angie shares her recent experiences at Kruger National Park in South Africa and how they manage their African Elephant Population. While we do not rehash much of our Episode 2 on elephants we do cover the main points. The poaching crisis has not abated over the last two years since we covered elephants. The Indian Giant Squirrel is not only one of the largest squirrels on Earth, they are also one of the most colorful mammals in existence. The Golden Lion Tamarin is a small primate from Brazil that nearly went extinct. They are one of conservations great success stories, as they were brought back from the brink. Not many are aware that Gibbons are a lesser ape, and one of our closest relatives’ outsides the great apes. These awe-inspiring primates live-in Southeast Asia and every single species is now under threat of extinction. Not only do they have some radical physiology, their behavior, especially the singing of their songs, will win your heart. By far the most iconic fish, the Great White Shark, was made a legend by the movie Jaws. Yet, it was a play on the strongest human emotion, fear, that made this creature on of the most infamous of modern time. Grey Wolves in the United States are losing protections that have been in place for decades. Without these, Wolves are now once again being persecuted. This interview was a real treat and one we highly anticipated. We were joined by Dr. Greg Rasmussen, who by all rights is the “Jane Goodall” of the African Painted Dogs. These are one of the most iconic and endangered animals on the African continent. We covered this incredible species in Episode 91: A Masterpiece, the African Painted Dog and hunted down Dr. Rasmussen to get his insight on his work in Zimbabwe with one of the most incredible species we have covered to date. One of the world’s most unique mammals, the Takin, is heading towards extinction. These ungulates are so unusual looking they have been described as a “goat antelope” or a “Gnu goat.” Some have even called them a character from a Dr. Seuss novel. Ivan Carter was involved in the World's largest relocation of lions ever attempted. In 2018, twenty four lions, 6 males and 18 females, were transported via plane from South Africa to the Marromeu National Reserve in Mozambique. Ivan discusses why and how the move was made of so many lions. Further, Ivan discusses how the Marroumeu Reserve has bounced back with multiple species of wildlife, after being nearly left barren after years of poaching.
