This week leads us to another radical animal, the Electric Eel. By far one of the most incredible biological adaptations are this animal's ability to naturally produce electricity. We delve into the eels ability to produce a shock as high as 860 volts. By far one of the strongest shocks produced by any known animal. Listen and learn to be amazed by our natural world. We welcome a really unique species, the Star Nosed Mole. While it may look strange, its nose and other adaptations makes this a fascinating creatures to learn about. This week we are very fortunate to have an interview with Ian Recchio, Curator of Amphibians and Reptiles from the Los Angeles Zoo. We discuss the plight of many of the planet's amphibians, specifically the Southern Mountain Yellow-Legged Frog. This species is one of the most endangered amphibians in California and Ian is helping to lead the efforts to restore this animal to its native habitat. The story about Ian and his efforts can be read HERE. This is an incredible conservation story that is still ongoing today. This week we travel to North America and learn about one of the largest amphibians in the world, the Hellbender.  Amphibians are incredible animals that have adapted and survived for hundreds of millions of years. Sadly, amphibians are one of the most endangered class of animals on the planet. It is estimated up to 41% of all amphibian species are threatened with extinction. Being one of the largest, Hellbenders and the other giant salamanders of the world are also threatened with extinction. These are incredible and ancient animals that you need to know about. Bathsheba Demuth is an Assistant Professor of History and Environment and Society at Brown University, where she specializes in the US and Russian Arctic. Her first book, Floating Coast: An Environmental History of the Bering Strait  (Norton, 2019) examines capitalist and socialist attempts to transform northern lands, seas, and Indigenous peoples, and was named one of the best books of 2019 by NPR and Nature.  Demuth's writing on energy, animals, and past environmental change has appeared in publications from The American Historical Review to The New Yorker.   Learn more about your ad choices. We return to the Arctic to talk about the oldest living mammals on the planet, the Bowhead Whale. These incredible aquatic mammals can live well over 200 years old and were hunted to near extinction in the early 20th Century. Today, the Bowhead is on the rebound but still needs our attention as the Arctic continues to suffer due to climate change. Jordan Veasley, also known as "Jungle Jordan," is a wildlife enthusiast and educator. The Japanese Macaque, or also known as "Snow Monkeys" are one of the world's most beloved monkeys. What makes them so iconic is the behavior of these monkeys soaking in the hot springs of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. Covering these macaques also allows us to explore the biodiversity of Japan and all the animals inhabiting their islands. One of the most unique owl species lives in the Arctic. These birds are in serious decline with currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. There are an estimated 28,000 breeding pairs left, which could be as low as 7,000 breeding pairs. Red Ruffed Lemurs are a critically endangered primate from the island of Madagascar. These highly charismatic animals are an example of the pressures many species are facing on this island nation. Due to habitat degradation and other human caused pressures, Madagascar is now recognized as one of the worst biodiversity crises we find ourselves in. The African Penguin is one of the best examples of how humans have driven many species to extinction, or as in the African Penguin to the brink. Isolated to the southern portion of the African continent. Multiple pressures such as over fishing off the African coast, humans destroying African Penguin guano nests and using it for fertilizer, climate change, ocean pollution and many other pressures all have led to a massive decrease in African Penguin populations.
