They are, of course, completely wrong, although some of these films are pretty good. I have always said that this show, the podcast in specific, is abut making sure that Ben has a record of me. who I am, what I thought and believed. I have always wished for some record of my ancestors, and I wanted to make certain that some day, my children and grandchildren would have some idea of who I am and why I am the way I am. I understand that in the future, my ideas will most likely been relegated to the dung heap, and I will thought of of some sort of Philistine. But like me, as I discover the past, perhaps my thinking will eventually be seen again as having a positive effect on Ben and his children. Things are seldom what they seem. In a way, that’s one of the lessons of the story of Esther and Purim. Like Esther “hiding” her true identity or Ahasuerus leaving out the fact it was Mordechai, not Haman he wanted to honor, everything we see today seems to have a waiting surprise and plot twist. Or at least a hidden sub-text that we pretend surprises us when it is inevitably revealed. So much seems to follow the very plots we’ve seen before. So why are we surprised? When Vladimir Putin invades Ukraine, we point fingers, assign blame and try to out patriot the other other side. But we never dig deep enough in the text to ask the one question that we should have been asking from the very first day…

Today is Purim. At sundown tonight, the holiday begins, as we celebrate the defeat of the wicked Haman (insert grogger sound here). For many years my favorite line in scripture comes from the Book of Esther, when Mordecai is telling her that she doesn’t really know if this moment isn’t the very reason that she was placed in her position. It’s a lesson that I have taken – and used – many times in my life. You may never know the reason that you have been placed are where you are. But… it may be that for some reason your place is necessary. Purim celebrates a time when the Jews actually overcame the oppressor. The victory, when it came, was swift and complete. It serves to remind us that G-d is always over us and always with us, so who can be against us? Sadly, as it turns out, there are far more Amalekites (Hamans) here than we understood. Moreover, we may never understand why such evil exists, nor why so many had to suffer and die because of it. There is no logical answer, it is simply our lot (pur) in lif

As the last day of July, 1914 came to its close over dinner on a Paris Street, there was a gathering of men who came to discuss the issue of the day. It seemed as if a sprit of “kriegsgefahrsustand” had taken firm control over everything and everyone. Seemingly, there was no stopping the calamity that was creaking through its opening phase. But IF it could be stopped, there was at least one man who was determined to stop it. As nations mobilized, diplomatic notes were delivered and debated, neutrality was discussed and ignored, and the sun had set over the City of Light, at least giving relief to a blazing hot summer day, that man, Jean Jaurès gathered over dinner with other men who hoped that something – anything – could be done to halt the march to destruction. Wine glasses were poured and dinner was served. Just three quarters of an hour later, the last hope for peace was gone…

Now and again, I get distracted by another topic that pulls at my interests. Yesterday, the MILSURPWRITER and I got into yet another discussion about Veterans. Specifically whether or not Veterans who make certain claims about their service while running for public office are… well… being totally honest or just playing to the publics appetite for heroes? There is a long history of service in this nation, and the total number of people who use that service in a nekulturny* manner are few overall, but they also tend to be the loudest. I personally have always held a deep suspicion for anybody who feels the need to tell me their CV more than once. But these politicians feel the need to tell you every day what they say they’ve done. The big question is why anybody would care?

There are things that I know, but that I do not have a "need to know." Experience is a great value to a person, but it can, and indeed must, be combined with careful thought and considerations. I shared with you my thoughts on the war last week, now I give you my concerns about it...
