Synopsis: By faith in God, Abraham sent his servant to his native land in Mesopotamia to bring back a wife for his son, Isaac. Synopsis: The night of Jesus' arrest and crucifixion, He gives some final words, reminders and encouragement to a soon to be saddened group of men. They had given up everything to follow the one they thought would be with them forever. He says he is going away and help in on the way. Synopsis: After Abraham heard of his brother having many children, he grieved the passing of his beloved wife, Sarah. He was given the opportunity to purchase the field and cave of Machpelah which was deeded to him. In doing so Abraham established Canaan as his new homeland as he looked for a heavenly country and city with foundations made by God. Synopsis: God tested Abraham by directing him to offer Isaac as a burnt offering, and by the obedience of Abraham and his seed all the nations would be blessed. God's sparing of Isaac pointed towards the Lamb of God Jesus Christ, the Messiah God would provide by His grace. Abimelech and Abraham made a covenant together by a well of water in a place Abraham then called Beersheba. In the course of their relationship they rebuked each other when appropriate, and this helped them to walk humbly and righteously before the everlasting God who was with Abraham and he called upon.

"God at Hand and Afar" Genesis 21:1-21. Synopsis: After Sarah gave birth to Isaac according to God's promise, a time came when Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael away. In His dealings with them God demonstrated He is a God at hand and afar who is our life, and Jesus made a new and living way for people to know God and have fellowship with Him now and forever. "Joy for Mourning." The passage is Genesis 9:30-20:18. Synopsis: This passage contains shameful situations due to sin that occurred when people did not trust or seek the LORD. Sin is shameful, and the LORD has provided the word for our learning so we might repent of our sin and wisely heed Him. He offers beauty for ashes and joy for mourning, and by the grace of God we are not doomed to a life of shame for past sins but eternal glory with Him. The angels went to Sodom where they found evidence of widespread wickedness without shame or repentance. God was merciful to Lot and His family to deliver them from the complete destruction of the cities He burnt with fire. Jesus tells us to remember Lot's wife, and praise the LORD God remembers mercy even in His judgment.

Genesis 18:1-33 Synopsis: The LORD appeared to Abraham who offered hospitality for his honoured guests. After God affirmed the promise Sarah would bear a son, Abraham stood still and drew near to God to intercede on behalf of the righteous in cities fit for destruction. How blessed is the follower of Jesus Christ Who intercedes on all made righteous by faith in Him!

The Sign of the Covenant" Genesis 17:1-27 Synopsis: God spoke to Abram and changed his name to Abraham, affirming the covenant He made that Abraham would be the father of many nations. God established circumcision as the sign of the covenant, and Abraham believed without wavering his wife Sarah would bear a son. In receiving Communion we celebrate the new covenant established by faith in Jesus and His shed blood, the new and living way to approach God through His death and resurrection. Sarai and Abram decided they could fulfill God's plans without seeking and waiting on the LORD and stirred up trouble. God was able to redeem the situation for good by revealing Himself to Hagar as the God Who heard her affliction and sees. Because the living God is good and does not change, we can rely upon Him and rest assured in His timing. The word of the LORD God came to Abram and He promised to be his shield and exceedingly great reward. When Abram wondered how he could know God's promise would come to pass, God cut a covenant with him dependent on God alone. The covenant God made with Abram is fulfilled in the new covenant Jesus Christ established in the Gospel, for our faith in Him is accounted for righteousness.

When Lot was taken captive, Abram was divinely enabled to pursue the enemy and recover all. His meeting with the king of Sodom and Melchizedek was a lesson in contrast which can provide insight into our hearts where our allegiances lie. Faith involves actions to honour God, and may we bless God Most High as we follow Him. The book of Hebrews is written to Jewish believers. Their background is in traditions, festivals, the rules, etc. The book provides so many ways in which Jesus is better than what most Jewish believers had relied upon prior to faith in Christ. The writer does not want them to go back to relying on their previous ways which would have a strong pull on them if they got away from Jesus. If they could potentially go backward, so could we! Hebrews can help in so many ways.

Synopsis: Abram returned to the land God promised to give him and experienced strife with his nephew Lot. While Lot lifted his eye and took what was offered for himself, Abram looked to the LORD who provided life with eternal promises, infinitely better than this world can offer. For believers Jesus is our life, and He alone is good. Synopsis: Abram exercised faith in God who spoke to him and obeyed His command to leave his country, people and family. God promised to bless Abram and make him a blessing, and God was faithful to His promise even though Abram was not without faults. Rather than putting Abram on a pedestal, let us seek, praise and trust God who offers us a living hope by grace. When people all spoke one language they united to build a tower to reach to heaven, but God came down and confounded the languages of the people and their scattered. Synopsis: God directed Noah to enter the ark he had made, the animals came to him and God shut him in. Noah, his family and all kinds of animals were preserved as God judged the earth with a global flood. A day came when the door to salvation was shut, yet presently it is wide open by faith in Jesus Christ. Synopsis: After God graciously gave mankind a fresh start on earth with a covenant of peace, sin clung to Noah and his descendants. From Noah's sons Shem, Ham and Japheth the earth was repopulated. Synopsis: After the earth was dried following the flood, Noah departed from the ark in obedience to God. He offered sacrifices of clean animals to God who established a covenant by the sign of a rainbow in the clouds, affirming He would never again destroy the earth with a flood. Life on a renewed earth began with sacrifice, and new life for sinners begins when we trust in Jesus Christ Who was sacrificed for the sins of the world.
