09/11/2020 Duration: 57minOn Wednesday November 4, Deacon Mike talked with Dr. Francis Beckwith, Professor of Philosophy in Church State Studies at Baylor University, where he also serves as the Associate Director of the graduate program in philosophy, and he is also an affiliate professor of political science. Dr. Beckwith is also a “revert” to the Catholic Faith, and spoke a little bit about his journey back. The major things that brought him back to the Church was his belief in the Eucharist, penance, Apostolic Succession and the Catholic view of grace. Then he and Deacon Mike discussed politics and law through the lens of our Catholic Faith. One of Dr. Francis’s arguments is that religious people cannot simply rely on the law, we have to actually make public arguments as to why our views are reasonable. The acolyte acts as a server at the altar who helps with certain duties during Mass. The Xavier Society for the Blind provides religious, spiritual, and inspirational reading materials in braille and audio to blind and visually impaired individuals. Malachy talked about the history of the organization, as well as what they do to bring resources of the Catholic Faith to the blind population. The 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil is a peaceful sidewalk protest, where Christians pray and fast in an effort to put an end to abortion. Robin talked about his journey to the Catholic Faith, his faith in God that has strengthened him through his life experiences, and his calling to the diaconate. He was raised in a loosely Baptist home and started to learn about the Catholic Faith through his then girlfriend, and now wife, Carolyn. Although he didn’t see many differences between Catholicism and Protestantism at first, once Robin and Carolyn were engaged, he decided to join the Church despite his questions and was received at the Easter Vigil of 1982. Robin spoke candidly about his oldest son's 10-year battle with leukemia and eventual death. He now sees God was working in his family’s life the whole time.
