Synopsis

Being Jim Davis is the world's premiere daily Garfield chrono-cast. Our mission is to review and discuss each and every strip of the long-running syndicated comic series before eventually dying of old age. We hope you'll come along with us on this journey, and share in the laughter as we catalogue the daily adventures of everyone's favorite indolent feline through a lens of history, humor, and heuristics. Each episode will be a thorough examination of a single strip. We'll place it in its historical context, then attempt to unravel the morals and meanings hidden under the surface. Finally, we'll consider the question of whether the strip stands the test of time. Above all, we promise to always present you with our sincere, personal, reaction to each Garfield comic strip. Our only thought is to entertain you.

For some reason, guest host Chase recorded all seven episodes this week from an Ohio tractor pull. And, hey, if you have a problem with that, maybe you should listen to his tabletop role-playing podcast Another Path and then give it a five star review on iTunes. That would show him!Today's strip

  • Episode 358 - Monday, June 11, 1979

    21/08/2017 Duration: 32min

So I'm writing this commentary before actually editing or listening to today's episode because Jon hasn't got his audio to me yet. So I'm not really sure what we talked about on the podcast. I mean, presumably we talked about Garfield and Jon Arbuckle going camping because -- SPOILER ALERT -- that's the theme for the whole week. And we probably did the drinks roundup because, y'know, Monday. Also, I definitely remember that fan-favorite guest host Chase is back on this week, so that's cool. Why not listen to Chase's new-ish tabletop role-playing podcast Another Path?Today's strip

  • Episode 357 - Sunday, June 10, 1979

    20/08/2017 Duration: 33min

Did you guys know Joe Pantoliano was in The Goonies? I did not. Did you guys know we've apparently referenced The Goonies before on this podcast? I also did not know that. But there it was, in the pre-existing tags when I went to add it to this episode. I wonder what the context was for that? Must have been something really interesting. Anyway, Garfield something something something.Today's strip

  • Episode 356 - Saturday, June 9, 1979

    19/08/2017 Duration: 26min

In this episode, we state a large number of facts. Just a staggering amount. Also I think somebody mentioned the word 'contra' at some point, so here's one of these. Today's strip

  • Episode 355 - Friday, June 8, 1979

    18/08/2017 Duration: 16min

So it turns out that the phrase 'riding the ragged edge of disaster' is actually a pre-existent phrase, so we probably should NOT have lauded Jim Davis for coming up with it. We apologize for that.Today's strip

  • Episode 354 - Thursday, June 7, 1979

    17/08/2017 Duration: 13min

This one's posting late because of technical difficulties. As in, I 'technically' didn't feel like editing last night. Anyway, seems like ol' Jim Davis could have benefitted from watching this video: For more information about self-service fountain drink etiquette, check out episode 00045: An Eternally Recursive Sequence of Self-Spawning Snoop Doggy Doggs of our other podcast Bear Friend Tea Party. For those who want to see even longer videos about boats, I dunno, maybe watch this thing?Today's strip

Sun Microsystems inc. (Sun) was a hardware and software company that has fought against software patents. It was bought out by Oracle in 2010. This page will be kept to document the great work that Sun did in campaigns against software patents.Sun signed a 10-year non-agression deal with Microsoft in 2004. (see Patent non-aggression pacts)Oh, and yesterday the President of the United States walked back his shitty, insincere, and long-the-fuck overdue condemnation of ACTUAL NAZISM in the streets of America. In 2017. AFTER its obvious lethality was directly demonstrated on film, and AFTER the organizers of the event referred to their brutal murder of an innocent person as 'a win' for their movement. That is a thing that happened yesterday.Today's stripBurn this into your retinas right now

  • Episode 351 - Monday, June 4, 1979

    14/08/2017 Duration: 36min

“Everything is more complicated than you think. You only see a tenth of what is true. There are a million little strings attached to every choice you make. You can destroy your life every time you choose. But maybe you won’t know for twenty years! And you may never ever trace it to its source. And you only get one chance to play it out. Just try and figure out your own divorce…“And they say there’s no fate, but there is, it’s what you create. And even though the world goes on for eons and eons, you are only here for a fraction of a fraction of a second. Most of your time is spent being dead, or not yet born. But while alive, you wait in vain wasting years for a phone call or a letter or a look from someone or something to make it all right, but it never comes. Or it seems to, but it doesn’t really.“So you spend your time in vague regret or vaguer hope that something good will come along, something to make you feel connected, something to make you feel cherished, something to make you feel loved. And the truth

    08/08/2017 Duration: 13min

So, if I remember how this works, by Tuesday I can drop the pretense that I'm summarizing what actually happens in the episode -- or even that I've bothered to listen to it all the way through -- and can instead just post a weird, kitchy video and call it a day. Right?Today's strip
