This week on The Session, we welcome Bale Breaker Brewing Company from Yakima, Washington. Crafting fresh-off-the-farm brews from the middle of a hop field, Bale Breaker is a family-owned brewery located in the Yakima Valley. Backed by four generations of hop farming experience, Bale Breaker started in 2013, and has grown to become the fifth largest independent craft brewery in Washington. Hops are in the family's DNA: the great-grandparents of sibling-owners Meghann Quinn, Kevin "Smitty" Smith, and Patrick Smith first planted hops in the Yakima Valley in 1932, the year before Prohibition ended. Now, Meghann, Smitty, Patrick and Meghann's husband Kevin Quinn are crafting brews that celebrate the world-class hops grown in their backyard. With a 30-barrel brewhouse at a 27,000 square foot facility, Bale Breaker crafts four year-round canned beers, including the widely celebrated Topcutter IPA, and a diverse offering of seasonal beers on draft. Sacramento, CA has been experiencing a flood of new breweries recently, and sitting at the heart of it is New Glory Craft Brewery. Chris talks to us about the rise of the hyper-local brewery and how he pulled back his distribution to focus on his own local market. We have a great, and refreshingly honest, discussion about how focusing on local allowed Wolf Hills to reduce costs and increase profitability. Chris found more accurate data in his local market that allowed him to better predict how his brewery would run when maximizing their local presence. Plus, we get to taste a huge mistake made in the brewery that turned out great, but leaves Chris with a decision to make on what to do with all that beer. Finally, we get to speak with our old friend Gary Glass from the American Homebrewers Association about the organizations 40th birthday, coming up on December 7th, 2018. In this episode of The Session we speak to Ryan Holmes from Imperfect Produce about his beer project. Imperfect Produce fights food waste by finding a home for ‘ugly’ produce. They source it directly from farms and deliver it to customers’ doors for 30-50% less than grocery store prices. Ryan teamed up with local brewers to use their produce in unique beers as well.
