  • It's Not Your Right to Challenge, It's Your Obligation

    26/03/2020 Duration: 29min

The best leadership cultures are those that encourage their workforce to respectfully challenge the status quo. It's the best way to get the best results, build sustainability, and prevent mistakes. It takes a tremendous amount of intentionality, confidence, & courage to create this environment of freedom. But it is an absolute requirement if you're going to create cultures of decentralized control.   Decentralized authority and decision making is the most effective way for organizations to deal with the demands and chaos of business. As a senior leader, you must be prepared to encourage your people to respectfully challenge you. As a middle manager or below, you have to have the courage to speak up when you disagree or have a different perspective.  You also have to be prepared to support whatever decision is made (assuming the decision is legal, ethical, & safe) and carry it out as if it was your own. In this episode, I break down this concept and the power of creating a culture where everyone real

  • Like It or Not, You're a Role Model

    18/03/2020 Duration: 25min

Whether you know it; whether you like it or not: You are a Role Model!  It's about "Setting the Example"; a basic leadership fundamental. I usually lead off with this tenant in all of my leadership talks. It’s one of those basic, common sense, leadership principles that when we hear it we say to ourselves, “Of course, I understand that”.   But successful leaders realize that you have to be intentional about setting the example.   It’s easy to get complacent and forget that we are always on a stage; that one of the prices of leadership is personal freedom and being under a constant spotlight. In this latest Dose of Leadership podcast episode I discuss the following concepts as it relates to “Setting the Example”: You are a role model: Whether you like it or not, or realize it or not, you must realize that leadership positions demand that you accept the responsibility as a role model.  I find it amusing that certain celebrities, politicians, & athletes claim that they have a right to be something d

  • How to Lead in a Crisis

    10/03/2020 Duration: 25min

It’s inevitable that at some point in your life you will face a situation that will require you to remain calm under pressure. Your child is choking, a customer is irate and irrational, a team member is not pulling his weight, you come upon a car accident, you fly your aircraft through a flock of birds on take-off and lose all of your engines… How you respond to stressful situations will make or break you as a leader. As leaders, you have no choice but to remain calm, regardless of the situation.  Therefore it’s required leaders learn how to compartmentalize their emotions and fear. A compartmentalization technique I learned in aviation is what’s called “Hack the Clock”. In this podcast, I discuss compartmentalization techniques that I learned in flight school that can help you remain calm in stressful situations.

  • Don't Be Afraid To Make Things Uncomfortable

    04/03/2020 Duration: 20min

I wouldn't describe my career as a professional aviator and Marine Corps Officer as a "comfortable" one. In fact, it was quite the opposite; the experience was at times arduous, challenging, & both physically & mentally challenging. Yet I look back at my experience with tremendous fondness and pride.  I believe the reason why is because there must be some sort of struggle to conquer or overcome. Struggle produces significance. Let's face it, business is a fight for survival...so why do we then insist on spending a tremendous amount of resources on to completely de-stress our organizations? Why do we feel like we need to make our employees feel like we are "one big family"? This episode is about busting through these fallacies and showing you that effective leaders occasionally make things "uncomfortable" so as to increase their professional capacity.

  • Building a Culture of Rapid Leadership

    27/02/2020 Duration: 21min

Rapid Leadership is all about distributing leadership responsibility throughout your entire organization. It's all about empowerment & extending trust. A fully realized culture of “Decentralized Decision Making” is all about pushing the decision-making authority to the absolute lowest level. Creating an environment where people ask for “forgiveness” instead of “permission” We think we need to focus on highly detailed plans, telling our folks “how” to do their job.  Instead, we should be focusing on communicating “what” outcomes we need...leaving the “how” up to them This introduces accountability & initiative into the organization. As the leader focus exclusively on the outcomes, “big picture”, and the why of your objective.

  • The Power of Praise & Recognition

    07/02/2020 Duration: 22min

A critical piece to the accountability equation is praise and recognition of your high performers. Recognition & praise moves the culture & engagement needle more than anything else. A HBR study in 2014 highlighted the top three drivers of engagement: Consistent communication from senior leadership. An understanding of how stakeholder's job feeds the strategy. Sincere praise & recognition of high performers The bottom line is that effective praise ultimately builds trust. People will ultimately feel valued and respected. When we become intentional & consistent about pointing out and recognizing when things are going well, then our people are going to start to feel like we have their best interest in mind.

  • Intentional Leadership & Culture Building Leads to Lasting Impact with Matt Fouts: Equity Bank Series

    02/01/2020 Duration: 38min

The Fouts family has built one of the largest, family-owned zoos in the country from nothing. They didn’t receive any government funds or grants to build it. They did it with hard work, dedication, and passion to be stewards for animals in their care and in the wild. They did it with the support of visitors like you. By 2004, over 4,000 people were visiting the park despite having very few amenities and no parking lot. At that time, Jim and Sherri, along with their son, Matt, decided to expand. However, they knew for it to be successful, it would have to be a world-class facility. They took a portion of the 51 acres and constructed a zoo from the ground up. Some of you may have seen the movie We Bought A Zoo with Matt Damon, well they BUILT a zoo from the ground up! On August 2 of 2008 Tanganyika Wildlife Park officially opened with 15 exhibits and three interactive areas.
