#352: Elon Wilson & Banaz Mahmod | "Black and Missing" - Part 4
19/01/2022 Duration: 41minOn today’s show, we discuss a different kind of “missing person”, those who are missing from the lives of their families due to police misconduct, and wrongful arrests. Such was the case for Elon Wilson, Natalie’s son, a former D.C. firefighter who spent almost two years in prison after a “pretextual” traffic stop, by then Officer Jonathan A. Freitag. Elon was released after it was discovered that Freitag lied about what happened and had a history of racially motivated stops. Laura also talks about a case that came across her desk where law enforcement had many intervention opportunities. Banaz Mahmod, a 20-year-old woman in South London went to police several times.Banaz asked the police for help. She told them she was ‘going to be the victim of an “honor killing”. She even gave them the names of the men who would kill her - orchestrated by her own father and uncle. When Banaz went missing there were already so many red flags that police should have realized the danger she was in. You won’t believe

Neither mother of either girl was able to get law enforcement to react with urgency about their daughters. Jim talks about the terrible consequences of the "wait and see" attitude when it comes to the missing. 05/01/2022 Duration: 31minWe continue our interview with Soledad O’Brien about her new HBO docu-series “Black and Missing”. Jim and Soledad talk about how the word “missing” is problematic as it can downshift the urgency of the public and law enforcement to find a person who is at risk. Laura applauds the series for focusing on women and girls of color, who often do not have a voice and are disproportionately affected by sex trafficking. https://blackandmissinginc.com#blackandmissing#neverstopsearching#soledado'brien#derricawilson#nathaliewilson#hbodocumentariesPLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSBOLL & BRANCH SHEETS -The Signature Hemmed Sheets from Boll & Branch are a best-seller for a reason. #348: Ghislaine Maxwell Guilty Verdict Part 1
01/01/2022 Duration: 32minOn Wed, Dec 29th, a jury in a New York federal court found Ghislaine Maxwell guilty on five of six counts related to her role in Jeffrey Epstein's sexual abuse of minor girls between 1994 and 2004. Maxwell was found guilty of five federal charges: sex trafficking of a minor, transporting a minor with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and three related counts of conspiracy. She was acquitted on the charge of enticing a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts. Maxwell, who now faces up to 65 years in prison, showed no reaction when the verdicts were read, though she did have a notable quote to the Judge, which we discuss. We at RCP, and Laura in particular, followed this case closely, and now that there is a verdict, we wanted to share our thoughts and expert analysis with our listeners. There is a lot to analyze including the charges, the prosecution and defense strategy, the “false memory“ expert, the verdict as well as the potential repercussions of this landmark case, and

#346: How Law Enforcement Can Help Victims of Color: The Building Bridges Project - Part 2
22/12/2021 Duration: 29minWe continue our interview with the Building Bridges Project team leaders Richard Washington and Marianna Wells — a program of the National Center for Victims of Crime. Richard points out that while there is a legacy of communities and families feeling uncomfortable reporting crimes to law enforcement — all it can take is ONE law enforcement officer who is trained and trauma informed to help make someone come forward with information about a crime. Support of victims and witnesses is critical. Laura talks about how accountability is important and that is what leads to trust. Jim explains how language and communication are critical skills in rapport building. Lisa wonders if communities don’t only mistrust police, but also fear retaliation for reporting crime. #345: How Law Enforcement Can Help Victims of Color: The Building Bridges Project - Part 1
15/12/2021 Duration: 34minDid you know that despite high rates of victimization, only 10.1% of Black serious violence victims received assistance from victim service agencies from 2010-2015?Alarmingly, nearly 90 percent of victims of a serious crime did NOT receive assistance in the aftermath of their trauma. Jim, Laura and Lisa have a very real conversation about what’s going on and wrong with Richard Washington and Marianna Wells of the Building Bridges project (BBP) - a program of the National Center for Victims of Crime.Richard and Marianna explain that BBP seeks to address underreporting, improve service provision and rectify disparities in treatment and services for crime victims from communities of color. This project promotes reconciliation through a productive and healing dialogue about what law enforcement should know in order to achieve effective encounters with victims of crime from marginalized communities. Laura asks about black women experiencing domestic abuse, sexual violence and/or stalking a

#344: Devil In Disguise: Honoring the Victims and Deconstructing a Serial Rapist/Killer' - Part 3
08/12/2021 Duration: 01h11minWe continue our analysis of a serial killer who raped and murdered at least 33 young men and boys. Jim points out how in this case and others, law enforcement assumed that all sex between gay men is consensual, and as a result they often did not take seriously reports of rape. If they had, they might have stopped JG sooner when victims came forward accusing him of rape. Laura explains why it is so important not to give sensationalistic monikers to these offenders and why at Real Crime Profile we do our best to not name them. Lisa asks about the post execution conspiracy theory posited by some, that JG was part of a large child sex trafficking ring. #DevilinDiguise#Peacock#VictimsMatter #SerialKiller #Profiling #BehavioralAnalysis++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! 02/12/2021 Duration: 38minWe continue our coverage of a serial killer we will only refer to as JG who murdered at least 33 boys in the Des Plaines, Illinois area -- some of whom have never been identified. Jim talks about the brazen arrogance of some psychopaths like JG who believe they can mingle and be buddy-buddy with law enforcement yet not be discovered for their crimes. Laura wonders why law enforcement at this time was not being more proactive when boys and young men were going missing in the same area. You can watch the Peacock docu-series about this offender called "Devil in Disguise".++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Please support our sponsors. #342: Devil In Disguise: Honoring the Victims and Deconstructing a Serial Rapist/Killer' - Part 1
24/11/2021 Duration: 38minIn our new series, we deconstruct prolific serial killer John Gacy (JG) who raped and murdered at least 33 teenage boys in the Chicago area in the late 70s. Throughout this series we refer to him as JG as unfortunately this killer has received so much notoriety in life behind bars that it has obscured the names of the victims he killed and we do not want to contribute to that. We want to reframe this case and honour the victims. Jim and Laura analyze JG's behavior and explain how he was able to target his victims and avoid discovery. We discuss the many mis-steps of law enforcement and the criminal justice system that allowed JG to offend for as long as he did. Across our series we use the Peacock documentary called “Devil in Disguise” as a framework for our discussion and analysis, so check it out and listen to our series or you can just dive into our episodes. #341: Stopping a Pedophile Pediatrician: Child Sex Abuse at Indian Health Service Hospitals
17/11/2021 Duration: 37minJust over a month ago, a scathing report was released confirming that top health officials knew for years about a pedophile pediatrician sexually abusing Native American boys at at least two Indian Heath Service hospitals. Though many of his co workers reported their fears about him to their superiors, Stanley Patrick Weber was allowed to practice for almost 20 years, abusing untold numbers of young indigenous boys — some as young as eight years old — before his conviction in 2020. One witness who was finally called to testify in the trial, Nurse David Marsh, is our guest today. David talks to us about what it was like at the dysfunctional Pine Ridge Hospital in South Dakota with Weber. This IHS hospital which is supposed to serve the tribal community, may still be harboring other predators who are still practicing today. 28/10/2021 Duration: 43minToday we talk about the tragic accident that took the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while working on the set of the movie “Rust” in New Mexico. Hutchins was accidentally shot during a scene rehearsal by actor Alec Baldwin who had been handed what he thought was a “cold” gun, which discharged as he was practicing drawing the weapon from his holster. Jon has worked on projects such as J.A.G., Punisher, NCIS, and Criminal Minds.
