After attending part of my talk on Street Epistemology to the Secular Student Alliance (SSA)(where roughly 1/3 of the attendees were Christians), Jacob stopped and asked me to interrogate his claim that Jesus is historically real and is his Lord and Savior. We spent most of our time figuring out how much of an impact the truth of evolution (if it could be explained and demonstrated to his satisfaction) would have on his high degree of confidence and exploring whether or not he is using a consistent standard for accepting intelligent design and dismissing evolution. It is not about proving that they’re wrong. It is about planting the seed of self-reflection. And a certain openness on the part of the person you’re speaking with is required for that. This can be hard to come by when dealing with deeply held beliefs. But in this interview I chat with Victor, who I think displays incredible openness. The journey toward truth is not always comfortable. Perceived boogeymen lie behind every corner. Confronting those fears, even just acknowledging them, takes a bit of courage. Dan had a traumatic event in his life when he was young, when his mother died after being in a coma for 18 months. Anyone who has been through such trauma and come out on the other side as a whole human being has a story to tell. In Dan’s case, this event had a lot to do with why he believes in God. During that time, he prayed to God, and God answered. I can feel the impact of that, even as someone who doesn’t believe in God. Dan was in need, and he feels like God showed up in just the right moment. That is incredibly powerful. Which is what made this conversation especially sensitive.
