Here on the Educated Guess Podcast, we do ur best to interview educators far and near that refuse to accept the status quo of our craft.  We present to you, Carlos Gonzalez of Los Angeles. Teacher, Assistant Principal, and now principal in South Los Angeles.  His dedication to high expectations for students and staff has, no doubt, lead to his rise as an instructional leader in his district. Homage to the tour guide of Midnight Marauders.Nikki Eddy is and AP/IB teacher at Castle Park High School, in Chula VIsta, CA. In my humble opinion, her biggest contribution to youth is providing the atmoshpere so students can organize around the issues that are important to them.  So transformative is her approach, that students have taken the lead on some professional development for school staff on issues of social justice.Ms. Eddy also happens to teach one of my favorite classes in high school, Theory of Knowledge, part of the International Baccalaureate program. Two dope boys are at it again, this time we’re in reflection mode!! Fresh off an amazing experience at the 2017 BOOST Conference, we touch base on some key takeaways from the week in the desert. We’ll also talk about after school’s potential when it pair up with the core day correctly and what people who aren't involved with after-school programs can learn from attending boost. An important interview with one of the most experienced and respected educators in San Diego Unified.She preferred to remain somewhat anonymous, since we would talk about current budget issues that have led to the eliminations of departments, RIF notices, and a class action grievance by SDEA (Sand Diego Education Association).Educator Maggie has been in SDUSD for 37 years, serving in many capacities, including technology and ELD. Dr. Medina is local to the podcast, residing and working in Chula VIsta, CA.He has 20+ years of experience in education at all levels, elementary to university. In his search for creating a space for all students to have a powerful voice, Dr. Medina earned his doctorate, titled, Sacred Purpose.  Sacred Purpose seeks to connect trauma informed practices and the restorative approaches. Friend and colleague, Principal Norma Sandoval sat down for an interview.We discussed her experiences as a learner and young woman in City Heights, San Diego, CA.  She highlights and touches upon her extensive experience as an educator, from teacher to principal.  Listen carefully, especially if you are inspired by those who seek to change the world through education and activism.  Norma is also very involved outside of her campus, as she sits on a citizen police review board, via SDOP. I am always amazed at how she finds the time and energy to do everything she does.  We need more educators like Norma Sandoval. Thank you for listening.

Quick check-in leads us into Rodrigo's visit to SXSWedu, which is a ComicCon of sorts, except it's framed around education.  He touches on the breakout sessions that he went to and will be bringing back to our district, as well as some of the booths on the floor that impressed him.Most significant for discussion on the podcast is the cutting edge speech by Dr. Chris Emdin titled, "Thank you very much, we got it from here."  Borrowed from ATCQ, of course.  We will be seeking to have him on the podcast.We also get into more about toxic educational environments, this time in Louisiana. A young man by the name of Jaylon Sewell was suspended from school for a hairstyle inspired by Odell Beckham Jr. He and his friends, all African American children, have been suspended and harassed for hairstyles like braids and twisties.  There'smany more smaller discussions. I've known Profe Michael "Cheno" Wickert since the 90's. Before the degrees, and well before we entered the field of education.He's taught in many capacities, beginning as an instructional assistant, then teaching in the juvenile court system, and now at the community college level.We discuss his journey through education, hip hop, charter schools, and sports. Professor Wickert also wanted to invite aspiring teachers to be a part of a streamlined program, which culminates in getting a degree and BCLAD in just four years.I hope you enjoy the discussion, music, and insight.

I've known Mace since the mid 90's, and to pin him to one job title would not do the man justice. He is known nationally for his work with Circulo de Hombres and helped found Teatro Izacalli, a comedy troupe. He has performed numerous times on stage and in film, but I believe this is his first podcast.In the concrete realm of education, he works for the Race, Human Relations, and Advocacy in San Diego Unified. We discuss his journey as a struggling student from Mexico to an Ethnic Studies degree at UCSD, restorative practices, and Chicano icon, Chunky Sanchez.

So we ditch the format of talking to educators or about education, to specifically address something important this election season:Where, oh where, have all the Bernie Sanders supporter gone?I interview 3 friends that have all had to (of course) switch to another candidate. In this order Justino (Trump), Filiberto (HRC) and Jason (Stein). We talk about what it was that drew them to Bernie and how the rationalize the switch to someone who clearly does not hold those same values. We talk about the flaws in each candidate, and I even play a little "Political Love Match" game with one of the guests.There is some cursing in the beginning of the second interview, so a little fast forward will get you beyond that. Random access memory.Testing out Skype, but Facetime worked better.Had no idea what the night had in store, when Rodrigo called Thierry.I do not know this dude, but we've worked around the same peoples and mindsets in education.As the Nikka Whiskey seeps through conversation, we lament about them damn Chargers and Measure C.  We discuss Measure B and why the South Bay is voting on something going on in North County.SORRY, but the gloves do not come off about Charter Schools in this episode. Rodrigo don't want it with Hov. Peace.

If you are a parent of a student athlete, or are a student interested in taking sports medicine at your high school, Esteban Monge is a great resource.We discuss his experience as an athletic trainer and how he became a teacher in the sports medical pathway in the Grossmont Union High School District.  We also discuss how laws have changed the way school administration is required to deal with head injuries of their student - athletes.As always, we ask Esteban who were the teachers that made an impact in hid life, and it wasn't all good.We recorded on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.  This is a day after Alfred Olango, an unarmed, mentally ill man, was shot and killed by El Cajon Police. 

We really only had one topic in mind.  Myths of education, such technology and posterizing.We ended discussing the Yuba City Teachers Strike and how teachers collectively bargain with their districts.  Everyone should know this stuff, so the next time your local teachers are being painted as 'greedy' by their district, you have a better idea how negotiations play out in the public.We also discussed SUHSD Area 2 elections, since that's where we both reside. We also discussed a community service opportunity for high school students.  If they come phone bank for teacher endorsed candidates and Proposition 55, they can receive an easy 3 hrs/day of community service.
