HearSay's Delicious Dish: 9/26/12
26/09/2012Segment A: Flavor Profiles First up in our monthly cooking program, HearSay host Cathy Lewis talks with our favorite foodie, Patrick Evans-Hylton and gets the latest dish on local restaurants and eateries with our popular "Flavor Profiles" segment. We'll also talk with Nisa Burns, author of the new cookbook "Kitchenability 101: The College Student's Guide to Easy, Delicious and Healthy Food." It's aimed at showing college students how to make quick economical meals and snacks with limited equipment and no prior cooking skill. Segment B: A Toast to Local Wines & Brews October is Virginia Wine month, and on this edition of HearSay's Delicious Dish, host Cathy Lewis and foodie Patrick Evans-Hylton will examine the industrial side of the craft of making wines and beers here in the Commonwealth of Virginia and Hampton Roads. What is the "locapour movement" all about? We'll have guests from the vine to the wine on this program to learn how it's either corked or crafted here in our own backyard.

Dropout Nation
25/09/2012Tonight's PBS Frontline special, "Dropout Nation," highlights the myriad of factors depressing graduation rates at a Texas High School. Unfortunately, those factors aren't limited to the Lone Star State and impact children across the country. On today's HearSay, we'll examine how those challenges play out in our region's schools and speak with a diverse group of educators, administrators and advocates who are on the front line of this ongoing fight for our children's futures.

Segment A: Call the Midwife/Segment B: Life in Hampton Roads
24/09/2012Segment A: Call the Midwife In conjunction with WHRO TV 15's September 30th premier of the hit BBC show, "Call the Midwife," host Cathy Lewis is joined by two modern day midwives; women who've dedicated themselves to ensuring that women have safe and healthy pregnancies and deliveries. One of whom is based right here in Hampton Roads, the other joins us live from the Indonesian province of Bali, where she provides free neonatal care and birthing assistance for the island's poorest women. Segment B: Life in Hampton Roads Each year, Old Dominion University's Social Science Research Center conducts a "Life in Hampton Roads" survey. This year marks the third edition of the telephone survey designed to gauge the "mood" of our region. We'll speak with the creators of the survey and see how Hampton Roads residents feel about diverse issues and topics ranging from transportation and the environment to military service and safety.

Segment B: The Ethics of Everything For twelve years, author Randy Cohen was the New York Time Magzine's resident moral philosopher. He joins host Cathy Lewis to discuss his new book "Be Good: How to Navigate the Ethics of Everything." We'll consider the role of ethics in our modern society and pose the question: "Are there a set of principles so profound and so essentially moral that they are applicable to everyone, everywhere?

The Eleventh of September
11/09/2012It's eleven years to the day since a series of terrorist attacks forever changed both the physical and emotional landscape of our nation. On today's HearSay we'll examine some of the lasting and often overlooked consequences of those tragic events. In our first segment, host Cathy Lewis explores the heavy weight borne by those fortunate enough to survive a traumatic experience. Later we'll address how the past eleven years have set the ongoing "war on terror" at odds with our civil liberties and right to privacy.

Voters will have a chance to decide the fate of the light rail expansion this November when they vote on the proposed referendum. He's the author of the book "How To Spot A Liar," and he'll share some clever lie detection techniques that are easily employed in your own daily interactions. Segment B: Norfolk Federal Bureau of Investigation For our second half, host Cathy Lewis is joined by Supervisory Special Agent Philip Mann of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Norfolk office. We'll discuss the federal agency's multiple responsibilities and examine their active role in the Hampton Roads community. We'll also address challenges faced by the FBI when simultaneously safeguarding national security and protecting the civil liberties of American citizens.
