Calling About Cancer
11/02/2016Cancer sufferers have endless questions about living with the disease, and Nurses Jamie Schwachter and Josette Snyder have spent decades answering frequently asked questions and out-of-the-box queries on theCancer Answer Line at Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute. The two have pooled their experiences into a new book called, The Complete Cancer Organizer, filled with answers to the most common questions about living well during and following cancer treatment. Edward Burtynsky: Water
10/02/2016Opening this week at the Chrysler Museum, artist Edward Burtynsky's new exhibit features large-format aerial photographs of bodies of water around the world. When rendered so large, the images become abstract, forcing viewers to see water in a different way. We're joined today by Chrysler Museum Director, Erik Neil, for a closer look at this new exhibition and its focus on how the environment has been affected by humans.

The Fight for Flint
04/02/2016The city of Flint, Michigan is in crisis. Findings of dangerously high levels of lead in the city's water prompted President Barack Obama to sign an emergency declaration and order aid from Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The research on Flint's municipal water quality was conducted by a team of 25 researches from Virginia Tech -- a group also largely responsible for the situation there gaining national attention. Today we'll speak with one of the leaders of that team about their work in Flint and the dangers facing other cities with aging infrastructure.

Because concussions and brain injury are not readily observable, they are often treated like invisible wounds and ignored by coaches and parents. Responding to Redistricting
19/01/2016Last week, three of our local Republican members of Congress joined other colleagues in requesting that the Supreme Court stop a new, judge-selected redistricting plan in Virginia or risk a postponing of congressional elections in the Commonwealth -- included in their list of concerns was "electoral chaos" and "mass voter confusion." On today's HearSay we'll take a closer look at the newly redrawn map and the impact its new boundaries could have on voters and legislators.

Women in Physics
14/01/2016This weekend, hundreds of undergraduate women will gather at Old Dominion University for a conference focused on helping them continue careers in the field of physics. Almost half of all undergraduate physics departments in the U.S. have no female professors, and in 2014 women earned less than 25 percent of bachelor degrees in physics, and less than 20 percent of doctoral degrees in physics. Today we'll talk with students and local leaders in the field about the importance of supporting women pursuing careers in physics and other STEM fields.
