Dogs offer social and physical benefits to their human companions. Clinical signs of respiratory system dysfunction are common in animals with congestive heart failure. For this reason, coughing has often (but often incorrectly) been associated with cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Many patients with heart disease have concurrent, unrelated primary respiratory disease.
