  • Growing up in the military as a foster family, to parenting his own kids - With Aaron Gore - S6 E66

    25/07/2023 Duration: 34min

I have two amazing girls at home, ages 18 months and 5. I grew up in a family that did foster care and childcare for much of my life, including the adoption of my littlest sister, who I helped raise while my father was away on military assignments.  The experience of being surrounded by small children made me realize that the most important job I could ever have would be to help guide a young life as they developed and grew. Moreover, I had a responsibility to make the world a better place for them than it was for me and to help them have a better life than I had been accorded.  I also work in the alcoholic beverage industry. My job is extremely demanding (60-hour weeks are the norm), necessitating a balance between my time with my family and what my company needs. It also means that my daughters have been raised around bars and breweries, something that would be anathema to my extended family that believes alcohol is the root cause of society's ills. It's been a challenge, but also one that I hope wi

  • Brutally raped and stabbed at 7, aged out of a group home, parenting as a foster mom, and earned an Emmy - Mandy Lemond - S6 E65

    11/07/2023 Duration: 42min

Author Mandy Lemond is a former foster child turned Emmy Award-winning TV Producer.  At just 7 years old Lemond‘s father raped her and left her for dead, that same night, he murdered little Mandy's mother. Lemond's father's crime left the Kentucky native a true orphan.  Mandy aged out of foster care after spending more than 11 years in a group home. She recalls, “I went to college with $5 to my name." With the same tenacity Lemond used to overcome her childhood trauma, she graduated on time from Eastern Kentucky University and was immediately hired by the local NBC affiliate as a TV Reporter.  Lemond continued to beat the odds – statistically only 3% of foster youth have a college degree.  Mandy's life finally seemed perfect, until December 2020, when Lemond's foster-adopted son, high on drugs, shot into the wrong home. The unintended target nearly died, the gunfire blinding the then 5-year-old. Lemond’s nearly 20-year marriage crumbled. She found herself divorced, with a son in jail,

  • Conversation, Education, and Empowerment for Women who are still on their way to Motherhood with Beth Rivelli - S6 E57

    18/04/2023 Duration: 32min

I personally missed motherhood which is why, as a Motherhood Story Coach, I am creating a movement of conversation, education, and empowerment for women who are still on their way to motherhood. The status quo silence of our culture contributes to a mindset that we are just supposed to know how to become and be moms and that we have to do it alone. I consider this a mindset "virus" that stays with us at every stage of motherhood and feeds shame.  When I talk with moms, I inevitably hear, "I wish I had had something like this when I was younger." I see your listeners as mothers of the younger generation who are desperately grasping to create their own motherhood lore and find models they can look to. - There is very little dialogue about the journey TO motherhood until we have issues - the downstream effect - The silence around this part of the journey leaves us feeling alone - Let's shed the "one size fits all" mentality when it comes to our bodies and fertility - Educating o

  • When Becoming A Parent Overwhelms a Pediatrician, She Writes a Book - Rebekah Diamond - S6 E51

    14/03/2023 Duration: 32min

Even as a pediatrician, I was completely overwhelmed when my daughter was born. I struggled with both the everyday chaos of being an exhausted new parent and some of the deeper pains of physical recovery and postpartum depression and anxiety. At each turn, with each new challenge, I found myself unable to find a source of guidance and support that didn’t seem to make things more complicated or give me more anxiety. The official rules from my own pediatric organizations were scientific but often rigid and unrealistic. The online, unofficial guidance was easier to follow and designed to lessen new mom guilt, but as a pediatrician, I knew there was unsafe advice being doled out with the healthy dose of big-picture perspective. I needed a one-stop-shop source to give me realistic, scientific, safe, and pediatrician-approved information, and it didn’t exist. So I decided to write it!
