Last week, we were invited to a big, fancy party at the top of the Muse Hotel in Bangkok to celebrate the new packaging of Ricola. Yes, the Swiss company that makes lozenges. Yes, the new packaging is party-worthy. And yes, it was quite the fancy party. All the Bangkok influencers were there, including Evo’s partner on the Bangkok Podcast and long-time Bangkokian Greg Jorgensen, Instagram celebrity and travel blogger Charlene from Malaysia, and one guy who managed to get 4100+ likes on an Instagram photo in under and hour, netting him 325 grams of gold as a prize!   We were a little out of our league. Neither of us are Thai, and most of our audience is from someplace other than Thailand. But Thai downloads of our podcast are starting to increase significantly, so we’re happy to do our part to spread the Ricola story via podcasting. Evo still sick. But finally went to the doctor. Now on lots of drugs. Yay, modern medicine and a qualified pro to guide you! Yes, even in Thailand. Sheila’s tired and hungover because her birthday was Friday and celebrated all weekend long. Evo’s tired because he was guesting on #Geo500, which you should watch. Ten years ago, Evo married his sister in Jamaica. As in officiated, not took-hand-in. But because of booking challenges, we had to switch properties for the last week of the long trip. So when she told us she found a good deal at an all-inclusive resort called Hedonism, we opted not to let her in on the not-well-kept-secret. Because the only thing that makes a newlywed’s unexpected stay at a swingers’ resort more awkward is being stuck there with your older brother. [sniff] They grow up so fast. No, we don’t have postcards to commemorate that experience, but we do have plenty from our current travels, and it’s almost time to send out our next batch, this time from Cambodia. Last week, we talked about the difference between saunas in Finland vs saunas in Thailand. This week sauna features heavily -- because Finland -- but it’s all about the ice. The ice hole, to be specific. Part of the fun (?) of sauna time is jumping in a frozen -- literally frozen -- lake or bay. Frozen. As in sub-zero temperatures. As in someone had to use a weapon to move the water from the state it wants to be in (solid) to the state more conducive to swimming (liquid.) Because Evo was chosen as the keynote speaker for the Nordic Bloggers Experience / Matka 2017 conference, he left Sheila home in Bangkok for the last two weeks. When the topic of Magic, Mysticism, and Mana: Superstition in Thailand came up on Evo’s other podcast, he’d planned on linking to the episode of This One Time where he told the story of visiting the Sak Yant Tattoo Festival from earlier in 2016. Only… it seems we never actually put that story into this podcast. Time to fix that! Short version: Evo and Ric Gazarian from the Counting Countries travel podcast, did an overnight to Wat Bang Phra, some hour-ish north-ish of Bangkok and attended the aforementioned festival. It was… intense. Watching a hundred or so very patient people line up to be jabbed repeatedly by a bamboo stick with a sharpened piece of metal on the end was one thing. Witnessing at least 10,000 sak yant devotees waiting for their tattoos to possess them so they could rush the stage like some George Romero/Ang Lee crossover gone horribly wrong is quite another. Intense doesn’t do it justice. Which is probably why Evo’s subconscious wouldn’t let him record the show at the time. To demonstrate

Just a scootch north of Bangkok is Ayutthaya, one of the capitals of Siam prior to Bangkok’s founding. The short history is that this UNESCO World Heritage site was sacked by the Burmese in the 18th century, and it’s on the “must see” list for those who want to get out of Bangkok for a day or two. So last weekend, we rented a motorbike (from hell) and made the easy drive. Trouble is… it wasn’t easy. 50 kilometers? Try a hundred or so. Good roads? No, not really. Lights on the bike for a safe trip back to Bangkok? Not even close. The good news is that we survived the trip. And while we had a fine time, we each had different takeaways from the trip, ranging from “meh” to something a little worse than that. Don’t get me wrong, we saw interesting things. If you think Evo's good at telling a funny story, you should have met his grandfather, Vic Rodkey. In his 88 years of life, he collected some of the finest stories, most of which have a least a kernel of truth about them. Or about someone else. Whatever. Gramps didn't let a little thing like "the truth" get in his way of embellishing a good story to greatness. This episode is Evo's tribute to his grandfather, who passed way on Veterans Day, 2016.
