Tuesday Teaching Tip 307 | The Beatitudes and Effective Communication: Lessons for Preachers and Teachers | “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” | Malcolm Cox Introduction What would it be like to preach and teach through the filter of the beatitudes? What would the impact be on us as speakers and our congregations as listeners? Today, we will look at the second beatitude: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4 NIV11) The second beatitude follows naturally from the first one: ““Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3 NIV11)1. The Meaning in the context of the Gospel The Pharisees were mourning over the Roman domination, and perhaps over the sins of Israel, but not their own sin. Spiritually healthy people of the Old Testament days wept when God was dishonoured. “Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.” (Psalm 119:136 NIV11) God noticed and applauded those whose hearts were grieve

  • S2: Easter Class 2: Witnesses to the resurrection

    14/04/2023 Duration: 12min

Introduction This is the second of two classes reflecting on the significance of the witnesses to the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This week's class will focus on the witnesses to the resurrection.  Who was at the tomb? The Text “Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realise that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”). Jesus said, “Do not

When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. 11/04/2023 Duration: 13min

Introduction What would it be like to preach and teach through the filter of the beatitudes? What would the impact be on us as speakers and our congregations as listeners? Today, we will look at the first of the beatitudes: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3 NIV11) 1. The Meaning in the context of the Gospel     - The kingdom is a key theme in Matthew. “In Matthew it is John the Baptist who first announces the coming of the kingdom of heaven', but Jesus takes the theme up in his preaching, in the sermon on the mount, in parables and elsewhere. The kingdom is the treasure beyond price, the pearl surpassing all others (13:44-46). It is what prophets and righteous men have been longing for: the day of salvation, the time when God's promises are fulfilled (13:16, 17). It is a time when moral compromises will no longer be appropriate (Matt. 5). It is thus in a real sense 'eschatological', when 'this age' will come to an end and God will rule perfectly. For Matthew

Men and Women in Christ: A Divine Harmony I am excited to announce that we are embarking on a new teaching series exploring the stories of men and women in the Bible. Through this series, we will delve into the lives, roles, and contributions of these Biblical figures and examine the relationships between men and women as portrayed in the Scriptures. Throughout the series, we will explore a wide range of topics, including leadership, family dynamics, cultural contexts, and gender roles. We will examine the lives of both well-known figures and lesser-known characters, and consider how their stories can inspire and inform our own lives. As we explore these topics, I hope that we will gain new insights into the nature of God, the complexities of human relationships, and the power of faith and redemption. My hope is that this series will help us to better understand and appreciate the rich diversity of experiences and perspectives represented in the Bible. I encourage you to join us in this journey of explora

  • S2 Ep408: Quiet Time Coaching Episode 408 | “Bravery Inspired by Jesus” | Malcolm Cox

    06/04/2023 Duration: 08min

Introduction In preparing material for Easter Sunday, I've been inspired by the conspicuous courage of the women at the cross and the empty tomb. Why did they remain in place at the cross when others fled? Why did they go to the grave when others stayed away? What does this tell us about Jesus and discipleship? The Texts "Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene." (John 19:25 NIV11) "After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come an

Introduction This is the first of two classes reflecting on the significance of the witnesses to the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This week's class will focus on the witnesses to the crucifixion and burial. Who was at the cross? * Women: Mary Magdalene; Mary the mother of James and Joseph; the mother of the sons of Zebedee; Salome; 'many other Galilean women'; the sister of the mother of Jesus; Mary the wife of Clopas. * Men: The disciple loved by Jesus     * "Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, "Woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home." (John 19:25–27 NIV11) * Centurion: "And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son of God!" (Mark 15:39 NIV11) Who was at the bur

Tuesday Teaching Tip 305 | The Beatitudes and Effective Communication: Lessons for Preachers and Teachers | “Class 1: An Introduction” | Malcolm Cox Introduction What would it be like to preach and teach through the filter of the beatitudes? What would the impact be on us as speakers and our congregations as listeners? My father runs a Bible study group during Lent. This year, it was focused on the beatitudes. One of the attendees wondered why many churches have the 10 Commandments on display but not the Beatitudes. I thought that was an excellent question. Then, in prayer this morning, mulling over this point, it came to me that the beatitudes are meant to shape who we are as kingdom citizens and how we preachers and teachers approach our preaching and teaching. Therefore, I am beginning a new series with eight classes to follow this one based on each of the Beatitudes and how they might affect how we prepare and present God's Word. Here they are: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kin

  • S2 Ep407: Quiet Time Coaching Episode 407 | "Weeping and Praise Belong Together in Prayer” | Malcolm Cox

    30/03/2023 Duration: 10min

Introduction We celebrate Palm Sunday in a few days. It is one of only a few incidents recorded in all four gospels (Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19 and John 12). I have mulled over which text to use for the Sunday lesson, finally settling on the account in Luke 19. I have chosen this one because it contains the blend and contrast of extravagant full-voiced praise, and the embracing of the tragic. Jesus weeps over Jerusalem. It reflects much of what is going on in the world today, and even in my own life. The Text ““Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embank

  • S2 Ep304: Tuesday Teaching Tips | Episode 304 | “Preaching and Teaching as Catalysts for Building a Vibrant Learning Community” | Malcolm Cox

    28/03/2023 Duration: 11min

Last Sunday we wrapped up our series on 1 Thessalonians. We learned together. How? Do we want to know what people know and are thinking? A preacher and teacher is tasked with creating a learning community - not simply preaching and teaching Ask questions In Matthew 16:13-16, Jesus asks his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" and then follows up with the more personal question, "But what about you? Who do you say I am?" This question prompts Peter's confession that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Allow silence  “Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.” (Mark 3:4 NIV11) People need time By remaining silent and allowing others to speak, we create space for them to express themselves fully and to feel heard and understood. People become convinced we want to hear from them Respond positively Takes courage to speak up - honour that Expand where helpful (briefly) Public speaking a

  • S2 Ep406: Quiet Time Coaching Episode 406 | "Praying Together - Part 2” | How Prayer Can Unite Believers | Malcolm Cox

    23/03/2023 Duration: 05min

Introduction Why do we pray together with other Christians? Let’s take a look at a classic passage about praying together ““Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”” (Matthew 18:18–20 NIV11) In this passage, Jesus teaches about the power of agreement in prayer and the importance of gathering together as believers. Context Jesus is addressing His disciples and teaching them about what it means to be part of the Kingdom of Heaven. He starts off by warning them about causing others to stumble and then goes on to talk about the importance of reconciliation and forgiveness. In verses 15-17, Jesus gives instructions on how to handle conflict within the church. Explanation "Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on ear

  • S2: "Praying Together Part 2" | Matthew 18:18-20 | Where two or three are gathered | Malcolm Cox

    21/03/2023 Duration: 11min

In this podcast, I explore the benefits of praying with others. We start by discussing why we less frequently speak about praying together despite valuing and practicing prayer. Matthew 18:18-20 is our starting point, where Jesus expects us to pray together and offers inspiration as to why it is important. ““Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”” (Matthew 18:18–20 NIV11)Praying with others allows us to come together in a shared experience of faith and connection, which supports us in our spiritual journeys and provides a sense of community. When we pray with others, we can share our burdens and joys and feel a sense of belonging. It can also deepen our own prayer life, as we learn from others' experiences and perspective

  • S2 Ep303: Tuesday Teaching Tips | Episode 303 | "Pulverise Procrastination and Perfectionism" | Malcolm Cox

    21/03/2023 Duration: 09min

Last Sunday: Family bereavement Plenty of study, not enough time for prep on the presentation One of my better lessons - at least in the way it was received. Trust the text: Know it thoroughly. Study well in advance. It has power in itself. Trust God: How much do I trust God? Prayer was more important on Sunday morning than technical preparation. Trust congregation: How much do I trust the congregation in their motivation to learn and ability to do so? Conclusion We are creatives - no creation is ever finished Send it out before ‘ready’ - who gets to decide what that means anyway?
