On WWE RAW 6/6/16, AJ Styles and John Cena engaged in a heated war of words where Cena called out AJ for his unprovoked attack and AJ responded by laying out his plan to defeat "the face that runs the place". Meanwhile, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and his Money in the Bank opponent, Seth Rollins, were missing in action on the road to their showdown over the title. Rather than either guy showing up live on RAW, WWE let video packages tell the story between the two.

On WWE RAW 3/21/16, the road to WrestleMania continued with Vince McMahon announcing that this would be Undertaker's last WrestleMania if he didn't defeat Shane in Hell in a Cell. Also, Dean Ambrose was gifted a chainsaw from Terry Funk to aid in his battle against Brock Lesnar. After a six year absence from WWE, Shane McMahon made a shocking return to Monday Night RAW and immediately kicked off a power struggle over the family business. The story is that some deal was cut years ago to preserve Shane’s place in the line of succession for control of the company, and Shane wanted to use that weapon in his arsenal right then and there for a hostile takeover of RAW, snatching the flagship brand away from Stephanie and Vince, the people he held responsible for running the company into the ground. Royal Rumble 2016 marked the night AJ Styles debuted in WWE. In addition, Triple H won the Royal Rumble and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (world title reign number 14). Vince McMahon returned to WWE RAW 12/28/15, two weeks after being Superman punched by WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns.
