[Beck Miller] Discipleship in a secular age: From consumer to mission - Matthew 5:13-16 (26th July 2026)

In this sermon, Peter preaches from 1 Samuel 3 about the exhausting weight of living as though everything depends on us, and invites us to move from responsibility (the burden of controlling and managing life) to response-ability (the freedom of listening and responding to God). Through Samuel’s call, Peter shows that faith is not something we manufacture or achieve, but something we receive as we stop, expect God to speak, and learn to listen together. Ultimately, Jesus carries the weight we cannot bear, freeing us to lay down our anxious self-management and pray with Samuel, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

The psalms teach us to draw near to God in prayer through all the variations of life. (final in the series)

It's hard to admit our hearts have a problem- we look at psalm 51 to learn the practice of confession

The inner life is complex, but God, who made all things, knows us completely.

In the secular age, faith may be experienced as spiritual deadness of life curved in on itself, but we are called to the new life that comes through union with Christ.

Peter speaks from this psalm of David about moving from the illusion of self-sufficiency to the humble recognition of our creaturely limits before God.

In a supernova age, the gospel will always produce varied responses — mockery, curiosity, and faith.

The gospel neither withdraws from nor blends into the “supernova” — it engages and reorients it.

Christianity is not private spirituality — it announces a rival King.

The gospel is not one more spiritual therapy — it breaks chains.
