  • Inside the Issue: September 2017

    18/09/2017 Duration: 48min

The Cincinnati Magazine Inside the Issue podcast is back! (And we explain why it took so long.) We also delve into our September Fall Arts Preview: digital editor Amy Brownlee discusses the new look of the city's stage scene, and Brian Isaac Phillips, producing artistic director at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, talks about the troupe's new theater. We also chat with Jay Gilbert about his Living In Cin column on WEBN's 50th anniversary, his long tenure with the station, and whether radio can still have that type impact on a city. Plus, we tease out our new Cincinnati Magazine Politics podcast series, dropping later this week.  Visit us online at cincinnatimagazine.com

  • Inside the Issue: July 2017

    07/07/2017 Duration: 55min

Here in Cincinnati—and America, really—we mark summer with an uptick in our hot dog consumption. The Queen City's past and present is practically a giant, continuous sausage link, hence our July coverage package exploring our current Golden Age of Hot Dogs. We peel back the casing on how the package came to be, and then discuss Justin Williams' feature on Sean McCarthy and his Cincinnati Strongman persona, as well as Philip Eil's tragic tail of a Portsmouth pill mill. Finally, we wish Adam Flango farewell.

  • Live at the Lodge Podcast: Hamilton, Hot Dogs, & Regular Dogs

    29/06/2017 Duration: 55min

Welcome to The Room Where It Happens. (I'm fairly confident that's a Hamilton reference.) Get more Broadway and Brooklyn insight from Adam Flango on his tears-and-avocado-toast-filled weekend in NYC, along with a seamless transition to our unrequited love of hot dogs, evidenced by our July issue coverage package. (Forgive us our inability to refrain from a few sophomoric jokes, as well.) We also dish on our weirdest reporting experiences—not nerdy ones, we promise!—and an in-depth discussion of Flango's recent piece on Hamilton County dog names. Also, I go on a 45-second rant about You've Got Mail. subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or find us on Stitcher. subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or find us on Stitcher. subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or find us on Stitcher. subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or find us on Stitcher.

  • Inside the Summer Travel Issue

    23/06/2017 Duration: 41min

In the June issue of Cincinnati Magazine, we offered 18 weekend getaways, one for each weekend of summer. In this episode, we look at a few of those destinations, including a small town in Indiana and an ocean-crossing voyage in Florida. We also talk to digital media editor Amy Brownlee about the joy of radio and go behind the scenes of Sarah Stankorb's story about rape on college campus.

  • Nuxhall Way: Scooter Gennett!

    07/06/2017 Duration: 14min

An emergency pod inaugurating Scooter Gennett into the Hall of Fame

  • Nuxhall Way: Wait, Are the Reds Actually Good?

    10/05/2017 Duration: 29min

The Reds weren't supposed to be good. They were barely supposed to be respectable. Yet more than a month into the season, the team has been hitting (quite literally) on all cylinders and actually winning baseball games. Sure, some of it seems like smoke and mirrors. But maybe, just maybe, these players are just better than we thought? Either way, the city doesn't exactly seem to be noticing. On an unrelated note, we also look at the odd guests attending Dre Kirkpatrick's summer football camp.

  • Inside the After Dark Issue

    27/04/2017 Duration: 27min

Cincinnati is a different place when the lights go down. And no we aren't talking about bars and strip clubs. (Well, except one.) The city is filled with late night entertainment options that digital media editor Amy Brownlee curated into May's Cincinnati After Dark package. We talk to her about how she distinguished this package from others and what her takeaway was after visiting a longtime Newport institution. Plus: looking into stories about the complicated influx of Chinese students to Miami and setting the scene for the Mayoral primary.

  • Inside the April Issue: the Creative Class

    04/04/2017 Duration: 58min

Cincinnati as a burgeoning hub of creative, millenial minds was a laughable notion just 15 years ago. But while similar cities have experienced a brain drain, Cincinnati has avoided that pitfall and grown its creative class. That's the focus of April's feature package, and to get a better feel for how the city's creative class has evolved, we spoke with stylist, Haile Fellowship winner, and creative class OG Tamia Stinson about the evolution of Cincinnati's creative workforce. And while your commenting on our podcast, make sure to check out Stinson's podcast, Creative City.

  • Inside the 2017 Best Restaurants Issue

    08/03/2017 Duration: 44min

Each year, a select few are responsible for evaluating the best restaurants in Cincinnati. This year, Alyssa Brandt was called up to the big leagues. We discuss the months-long process of eating and thinking about food, how it works, and what surprised her (like, say, eating ears?) along the way. After that, we look back at a uniquely Cincinnati story in February's issue about beloved and troubled chair maker Chester Cornet.

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: Bengals PR Director Jack Brennan

    17/02/2017 Duration: 55min

Jack Brennan has spent more than two decades as public relations director for the Cincinnati Bengals, and, ahead of his upcoming retirement, Justin Williams talked with him about covering the team versus being part of the organization, what it's like dealing with the many colorful Bengals personalities over the years, and Brennan delivers his spot on Mike Brown impersonation.

  • Live at the Lodge: Puppies and the Past

    30/01/2017 Duration: 37min

How do you write a story about a dog without it becoming an unrelenting sapfest in the same vein as A Dog's Purpose? We discuss that and more, including movie theater etiquette, Cincinnati's love of history, and personal blasts from the past. This episode was recorded live at the Overlook Lodge on January 23, 2017.

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: Post Mortem

    05/01/2017 Duration: 33min

As the season came to a close with rousing win against the Ravens, the Bengals finished their disappointing season 6-9-1. It's time to take stock of what went wrong, what went right, and what's next for the team.

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: History Repeated

    20/12/2016 Duration: 28min

Bundled up in coats, hats, and mittens, we ventured out into the freezing temperatures at Paul Brown Stadium and took in the sights and sounds of the Bengals-Steelers game. The sights were a split crowd flicking off fans in Steelers gear, and the sounds were the guy two rows in front of us screaming to throw the ball downfield in order to draw a pass interference penalty. A report from Fulcher 2 Stay Bowl V

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: Trash Talk

    13/12/2016 Duration: 31min

This podcast? Garbage. These hosts? Garbage. But most of all, Terrelle Pryor? Garbage. Adam Jones exists to enliven the Bengals otherwise moribund season, and he did that and more with his pointed commentary on the quality of play of one Terrelle Pryor. We talk about that and, because this podcast is nothing if not devoted to the cinematic exploits of Vin Diesel, we also spend more time than any Bengals podcast will discussing the latest Fast and Furious trailer.

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: Battle of the Redheads

    07/12/2016 Duration: 34min

Andy Dalton saw his opponent across the field. A fresh-faced rookie named Carson Wentz posed a threat to Dalton's title as the NFL's best ginger quarterback, one that he has proudly held since 2011. What ensued ostensibly pitted the Bengals against the Eagles in a game that didn't carry much meaning to two teams out of playoff contention, but for Dalton and Wentz, it meant everything.

  • Live at the Lodge: Giving Thanks

    30/11/2016 Duration: 46min

We have topics related to the magazine to discuss, we swear. But we here at the Cincinnati Magazine podcast feel very strongly about Thanksgiving food. And since the teams that play sports in Cincinnati aren't particularly inspiring, we decided to focus on turkey, stuffing, and gravy instead. We also take a peak inside December's Best of the City issue.

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: Silver Linings Playbook

    15/11/2016 Duration: 37min

The Bengals lost to the Giants on Monday night in spectacularly uninspiring fashion. They played it safe on fourth down (after plenty of unmanageable third downs), wilted against a weak rushing offense, and continued their trend of losing relatively close games. The Bengals are 3-5-1, and very possibly could lose against a run-heavy Buffalo team in Cincinnati on Sunday. And yet, optimism abounds at the Fulcher 2 Stay Podcast! (Eat your heart out, David O. Russell.) Not for this season of course; that's already just about gone to shit. But next year, it might not be as bad. (Repeat this to yourself 10 times in a row after each Tyrod Taylor touchdown this week.)

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: Midseason Awards

    08/11/2016 Duration: 36min

The Bengals have an annoying 3-4-1 record midway through the season, and the London game cemented the team's status as underwhelming at best. Yet amazingly, underwhelming may be just good enough to win the AFC North. We hand out midseason awards and superlatives, including MVP, player that causes the most consternation, and best couple. Plus, there's a special audio game at the end!

  • Fulcher 2 Stay: The Browns Cure All

    24/10/2016 Duration: 34min

The Browns are very bad at football. This much is undeniable. The Bengals may not be bad at football, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are good at football either. The Bengals are a hard team to read, so we looked into what actually mattered in Sunday's 31-17 victory. For more on the Bengals, make sure to check out Fulcher 2 Stay at CincinnatiMagazine.com. And don't forget to subscribe/rate the podcast on iTunes.
