  • Case in Point: John Nanni Is a Living Object Lesson for Polio Vaccination - #1030

    20/11/2018 Duration: 19min

Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. John Nanni, as most people who contract polio do, got it as a baby, just one year before the vaccine became widely available. Although he recovered from the paralysis as a child and even played sports, John has been plagued in adulthood by Post Polio Syndrome. John is an active polio fighter who nobly uses his own situation as a living object lesson for ending the horrific disease once and for all. On the back of his wheelchair, he keeps a sign that says, “64 Years Later: This is what a Polio looks like when a child is not vaccinated.” His unsurpassed passion for eradicating the disease primarily benefits children in the developing world. Without intervention from Rotary with help from its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, hundreds of thousands of children would be crippled every year. Still, polio is just a plane ride away. Every child in the world should be vaccinated. Be a hero! Join the elite group of supporter

The nonprofit fundraising platform Classy recently announced it had reached $1 billion in funding raised for its clients and their causes. Scot Chisholm, co-founder and CEO, visited with me to share some of his insights about reaching this “BHAG, big, hairy, audacious goal” set when the company was founded. You can watch the full interview with Chisholm in the player at the top of this article. Chisholm noted that it took six years to reach $500 million in funds raised but only 14 months to double than mark. “So, the growth is still happening which is really exciting.” He was prompted to launch Classy after organizing a pub crawl to raise money to fight breast cancer in honor of his mother—a two-time survivor. The nonprofit he chose refused to accept the money! He knew then there had to be a better way. Read the full Forbes article and watch the interv

She is proud of this. She is particularly proud that no one in her professional circle--many of whom she counts as friends--knew that she is a survivor of sexual abuse as a child. As the #metoo movement gained steam over the past few years, Leta realized that it was time to share her story. She posted her experience on Facebook, went to bed and awoke to an overwhelming show of support--and an invitation from a publisher to write a book. Her book, Love Me Too, doesn’t wallow in self-pity nor does it reveal the most intimate details of her abuse. Much of the book is a guide for other survivors, whom she hopes to help achieve the sort of profound happiness she enjoys. She also shares some parenting tips that can help protect children from abuse, at surprisingly young ages--without scaring them. You don’t want to miss one second of m

She is proud of having implemented an effective process for detecting polio, especially in the environment. Identifying when the virus is circulating in the environment allows UNICEF, WHO and Rotary to implement measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Dr. Ujala is a powerful woman in Pakistan. She acknowledged that at times she faces discrimination, noting that less well-educated women in other parts of the society in Pakistan face much greater challenges. Still, she uses her power and influence to advocate for Pakistan’s children and simultaneously demonstrates that women can contribute more. Be a hero! Akhil also shared his thoughts on vaccine safety, noting that millions of people are alive because of vaccines. Speaking to Rotarians who may be concerned about vaccine safety or effectiveness, he said there are millions of children who are not paralyzed today precisely because they have been vaccinated. Learning from heading up the polio fight in Afghanistan, his last assignment, Akhil remains convinced that we can eradicate polio even there. • Ina Pinkney Shares Her Incredible Polio Story - #1021

    01/11/2018 Duration: 14min

Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. A generation ago, most people in the U.S. knew a polio survivor. Today, there are so few left, there are very few so many people can’t name an acquaintance, let alone family member, who has been afflicted. Ina Pinkney was infected in 1944, during World War II, more than a decade before the Salk Vaccine became available, stemming the annual summer epidemics that paralyzed communities almost like it paralyzed children. Because parents didn’t know how the virus spread or why it did only in summer months, parents avoided many summer activities from ice cream to swimming pools. Ina shared her touching story with me on World Polio Day, an annual event hosted by Rotary and the other members of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2D9ZPhx. Jed Emerson, 59, widely recognized in the impact investing community, recently published a new book, The Purpose of Capital: Elements of Impact, Financial Flows and Natural Being, that calls into question some of the fundamental precepts of the movement, the very underpinnings of capitalism. Impact investors seek to solve social problems from poverty to climate change by making investments that will not only mitigate the ills but will provide a financial return. Early in his book, Emerson observes, “There is a central challenge in this effort to ‘do well and do good’ in that at its core is a commitment to making use of the very financial tools that have failed to create a just, equitable and sustainable world in the pursuit of creating a more just, equitable and sustainable world.” He’s suggesting we may be treating burn victims with fire because we depend

  • How This New Crowdfunding Site Facilitates Direct Giving To Individual Children - #1016

    24/10/2018 Duration: 16min

Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. Thomas Doochin has created a completely different sort of crowdfunding platform for nonprofits. He’s set up a store where donors can purchase items for specific children sponsored by agencies that support them. The site, called Daymaker, bridges two gaps that traditional nonprofit crowdfunding sites have, by first allowing donors to give to a specific child and second giving the donor the opportunity to purchase a specific item so that the nonprofit has no discretion about how to use their money. With the same ease as giving a small donation, donors can now give an item. For some donors, this may be just what they need to allow them to feel comfortable giving to a nonprofit organization. Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. Read the full Forbes article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/2pZSuZs. Four students at University College London who launched aptly named Rice Inc. have been awarded the $1 million Hult Prize to meet the official challenge to “build a scalable, sustainable social enterprise that harnesses the power of energy to transform the lives of 10 million people by 2025.” Their plan is to make fast, effective and affordable rice drying available to smallholder farmers who, lacking the technology, typically lose about 20% of their harvest in the drying process. Today, those farmers simply spread their rice on the ground in the sun, where is it vulnerable to weather, birds and other pests that may eat or contaminate the rice. “We solve inefficiencies in the rice supply chain caused by an existing power imbalance between smallholder farmers and millers,” says Kisum Chan, the team’s chief marketing officer. “We solve this by providing fa
