On a frosty November morning in 1979 a 9-point whitetail buck walked into Don Higgin's set. Don squeezed the trigger on his grandfathers Remington 12-gauge, the slug found it’s mark.  A decade later Don acquired his grandparents small farm and he wasted no time transforming it into a whitetail paradise. After honing his craft, Don became a conservation contractor and transformed lots of the Midwest into whitetail habitat for the US Government and private individuals. Don has written for numerous outdoor publications, wrote a book in 2005 called Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World, and now speaks to deer hunters at a variety of deer hunting seminars. And, one week in October 2017, Don shot two bucks of a lifetime totaling over 400 inches of antler. What you don't realize is that it took over 10 Years collectively of waiting, watching, and planning to make that happen. Don shares with us how he did it. We wanted to know more about select tree cutting for deer habitat so we turned to our friend from the Quality Deer Management Association, Matt Ross.  The conversation became much more than a tree cutting exercise, as we explored the history of the QDMA, deer herd balance, proper doe to buck ratios, quantitative herd analysis, deer plants and overall deer habitat. Matt Ross is certified wildlife biologist and licensed forester. He received his bachelor's in wildlife conservation from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and his master's in wildlife management from the University of New Hampshire. Before joining the QDMA staff, Matt worked for a natural resource consulting firm in southern New Hampshire, and he was a QDMA volunteer and Branch officer and is now QDMA's Assistant Director of Conservation. When I first received an email from Ronnie Strickland, I wasn't sure, but I thought, could this be Ronnie Cuz Strickland sending in fan mail to our podcast?  Turns out it was Cuz.   Cuz has been around the outdoor industry scene for quite some time now.  You may remember the television show Mossy Oak's Hunting the Country back in the 90s.  I was a much a fan of that show back then as Cuz is a fan of this podcast today.  Cuz was one of the first employees of Mossy Oak when he joined the team back in 1987 and worked with Toxey Haas to develop the Media Production Department. Dave Paulides, author of the book Missing 411 - Hunters - Unexplained Disappearances, part of a series backed by the CanAm Project, decided to delve deeper and investigate a subset of missing persons, specifically those who disappeared in National Parks and Forests. Seems like one of the most controversial topics amongst hunters these days is high fence hunting. So, we decided to take another deeper look into the subject, only this time with Shawn Smith from Texas. If you’ve shopped for a tree stand between 1996 and now, you may have noticed a sticker on the box or on the tree stand with the three initials, TMA - the Treestand Manufacturer's Association. This sticker seems to be attached to everything we buy relative to climbing a tree these days, but what the heck does in mean? Climbing a tree prior to 1996 really was all that saf  and certainly there was no accountability regarding tree stand industry standards.  In a room, in a voluntary meeting at a trade show in Atlanta, Georgia in 1995, a group of treestand manufacturers gathered to build a new set of standards specific to a niche group of products that only a niche group of people understand, called treestands. It wasn’t as smooth as you might think, but it certainly changed the industry forever, made it safer, and ultimately more enjoyable and effective for the hunter. John Eberhart, a Michigan resident, has been hunting the Michigan deer woods for 53 years. He has 30 bucks in the Michigan record books that John says were taken from 19 different properties in 10 different counties.  John prefers the public land hunts and the door knocking method to hunt on new pieces of land that are privately owned.  He's been on 21 out of state hunts and has take 19 Pope and Young bucks on 13 different properties in 5 different states. As you can see, John gets around.
