Hunting in multiple semi-local states can be a huge advantage to a deer hunter, especially if some states hold longer seasons.  Henry Moncrief uses this to his advantage as he hunts Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine.  These states, despite their reputation for holding smaller racked bucks compared to the midwest for example, lower deer densities, and difficult hunting terrain, Henry seems to have found a formula for hunting and killing the bigger, if not the biggest bucks in these woods no matter which state he hunts.  Henry changes his strategies based on the weather patterns that he northeast can deliver, loves to read hunting pressure, and says that scent control to the point of smelling like nothing is a key to his success. Why do we hunt?  Why are we hunters? What makes us tick? For many reasons, these are questions that we should probably ask ourselves as hunters.  These are also the questions that Robbie Kroger has set out to answer as part of his Blood Origins project.  Through interviews with hunters and his own experiences, Robbie has discovered that we all have a connection in our roots to hunting, passed along from generation to generation, and that often times the connection to hunting is deeper than that.  This is what we might consider our hunting heritage. And if you are familiar with this concept, you know what it is. It has a smell, a feel, you breathe it in and it feels amazing.  It is the freedom that hunting provides. And it is freedom that allows hunting to exist.  This may seem a bit cerebral at the moment, but I suspect that you'll understand it better as we discuss Blood Origins with Robbie. On a frosty November morning in 1979 a 9-point whitetail buck walked into Don Higgin's set. Don squeezed the trigger on his grandfathers Remington 12-gauge, the slug found it’s mark.  A decade later Don acquired his grandparents small farm and he wasted no time transforming it into a whitetail paradise. After honing his craft, Don became a conservation contractor and transformed lots of the Midwest into whitetail habitat for the US Government and private individuals. Don has written for numerous outdoor publications, wrote a book in 2005 called Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World, and now speaks to deer hunters at a variety of deer hunting seminars. And, one week in October 2017, Don shot two bucks of a lifetime totaling over 400 inches of antler. What you don't realize is that it took over 10 Years collectively of waiting, watching, and planning to make that happen. Don shares with us how he did it. We wanted to know more about select tree cutting for deer habitat so we turned to our friend from the Quality Deer Management Association, Matt Ross.  The conversation became much more than a tree cutting exercise, as we explored the history of the QDMA, deer herd balance, proper doe to buck ratios, quantitative herd analysis, deer plants and overall deer habitat. Matt Ross is certified wildlife biologist and licensed forester. He received his bachelor's in wildlife conservation from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and his master's in wildlife management from the University of New Hampshire. Before joining the QDMA staff, Matt worked for a natural resource consulting firm in southern New Hampshire, and he was a QDMA volunteer and Branch officer and is now QDMA's Assistant Director of Conservation. When I first received an email from Ronnie Strickland, I wasn't sure, but I thought, could this be Ronnie Cuz Strickland sending in fan mail to our podcast?  Turns out it was Cuz.   Cuz has been around the outdoor industry scene for quite some time now.  You may remember the television show Mossy Oak's Hunting the Country back in the 90s.  I was a much a fan of that show back then as Cuz is a fan of this podcast today.  Cuz was one of the first employees of Mossy Oak when he joined the team back in 1987 and worked with Toxey Haas to develop the Media Production Department. Dave Paulides, author of the book Missing 411 - Hunters - Unexplained Disappearances, part of a series backed by the CanAm Project, decided to delve deeper and investigate a subset of missing persons, specifically those who disappeared in National Parks and Forests. Seems like one of the most controversial topics amongst hunters these days is high fence hunting. So, we decided to take another deeper look into the subject, only this time with Shawn Smith from Texas. If you’ve shopped for a tree stand between 1996 and now, you may have noticed a sticker on the box or on the tree stand with the three initials, TMA - the Treestand Manufacturer's Association. This sticker seems to be attached to everything we buy relative to climbing a tree these days, but what the heck does in mean? Climbing a tree prior to 1996 really was all that saf  and certainly there was no accountability regarding tree stand industry standards.  In a room, in a voluntary meeting at a trade show in Atlanta, Georgia in 1995, a group of treestand manufacturers gathered to build a new set of standards specific to a niche group of products that only a niche group of people understand, called treestands. It wasn’t as smooth as you might think, but it certainly changed the industry forever, made it safer, and ultimately more enjoyable and effective for the hunter. Ben’s reputation in the whitetail world is no secret. With the many Boone and Crockett bucks to his credit, it's easy to see why hunters want to know more.
