The first Bond movie not to be based on an Ian Fleming story, GoldenEye was a huge hit, grossing more than Dalton’s two flicks combined. Directed by Martin Campbell (who would return to introduce a new Bond with Casino Royale) and introducing Judi Dench as M, GoldenEye also spawned a hit video game that might be more popular than the movie.
