We come upon Christ and His disciples being questioned why they are fasting as John the Baptist's apostles are doing with the Pharisees. The real questinon is why didn't the people rejoice having the Messiah with them but wanted tradition to be honored instead. This is true even today as religion is be lauded over more than the Savior and the truth of the Gospel.
