Today's sermon is presented by Chisso Dinata, the Pastoral Intern at Broadway Baptist Church.

Paul's Christian experience, like that of our Lord, was marked by suffering, imprisonments, beatings, mocking's, and finally martyrdom. There were those at Ephesus (Hymenaeus and Alexander – 1 Tim. 1:20 and Phygelus and Hermogenes – 2 Tim. 1:15), as well as in Corinth, that were ashamed of Paul's sufferings, and even questioned the legitimacy of his Apostleship. Paul urges Timothy to “stand tall and share in the sufferings of Christ”.

The theme of Paul's second and final letter to Timothy is a bold, clear call for perseverance in the gospel in spite of suffering. Paul calls on his young coworker (spiritual son in faith) to continue the fight of faith, even as Paul approaches the end of his own life.

We close our study of 1 Timothy this morning with an examination of Paul's final charge to young Timothy. There have been many warnings, charges and admonitions in this first letter to Timothy. Warnings included everything from false teachers to idle busybodies. Paul closes this letter with some final warnings related to something that most Americans and Christians struggle with; greed, discontentment and materialism.
