Fifty years ago England lifted the World Cup in Wembley Stadium in front of nearly 97,000 people. It was a hot July afternoon full of cheering and excitement which made football fans all over the country feel the love for the beautiful game. Former Director General of the Royal United Services Institute, Professor Michael Clarke was invited to Downing Street in November 2002 to brief former Prime Minister Tony Blair before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Whether at sea or on land, the Sea Cadets offer 10 to 18-year-olds the opportunity to get involved in nautical themed activities. Now, the charity is calling on more serving and former Royal Navy/Royal Marines to volunteer as leaders. Fabian Hiscock retired from the Navy in 2001 with the rank of Commodore. Today he is Unit Chair of the Rickmansworth & Watford Unit. Tim Humphries asked him, now he’s ‘out of uniform’, what encouraged him to step back into it for the Cadets? Damn the Torpedoes! is an audience-inspired, military themed, 30 minute comedy sketch show that was a first for BFBS Radio. The Damn The Torpedoes! team invited injured service personnel and members of the Band of Brothers, to help create some sketches at a ‘Writers’ Room’ workshop at the Tedworth House Recovery Centre. Alison Pritchard the shows Producer says “We ran a comedy writing ‘script workshop’ with the ‘Band of Brothers’, a mixed group of Afghan veterans overcoming life changing injuries which was great fun, in fact some of the sketches we worked on that day made it into the winning show. Richard Hatch, the show’s Executive producer says “The show is a scattergun of comedy sketches, which try hard to place the comedy whoopee cushion carefully on the chair of, the British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy. The show takes listeners into action around the world, refuelling at exotic locations like the Kabul inter-services golf classic and the worst nightclub in Portsmouth”. Damn The Torpe

The Marine Society offers learning programmes that help seafarers improve their education and take the next crucial step in their professional development. The charity are direct providers of a number of programmes and also partner with education and training bodies. Tim Humphries visited their officers and spoke to Mark Windsor, Director of Lifelong Learning.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, BFBS Germany’s Dave Roberts and Misty McCready produced a unique documentary focusing on the young inmates. This programme includes interviews with survivors of the camp, poignant archive audio, and first-hand accounts written in 1945. “When we started researching the story of Bergen-Belsen we were shocked to discover that a high proportion of the camp's inmates had been children,” said Misty. “Hearing that many of these child-survivors had been made to feel that they weren't ‘true’ survivors – because of their age – seemed intolerable, and we couldn't ignore it. We were privileged to speak to four people who had suffered at the injustice of the Nazi regime, yet had taken positives away from what would have destroyed many of us.” Among the interviewees are survivors Rudi Oppenheimer and Miryam Sommerfeld. Bernard Levy, a British soldier who arrived approximately one week after the liberation, also shares his story.

Amy Casey meets Lt Col (Retd) Stewart Berman, formerly from Queen's Dragoon Guards and now the Garrison Staff Officer at Bovington Camp. He took Amy on a tour around the camp, a British Army military base in Dorset. If you like tanks, this is the place to be...

All this week we are exploring the camps at Bovington and Lulworth. Bovington Garrison supports two barracks complexes and two forest and heathland training areas that support Phase Two training for soldiers of the Royal Armoured Corps and armour trades for the Household Cavalry Regiment as well as other units.
