Chris and Keats Boyd take calls from the audience, and discuss the December jobs numbers and other financial news. Now that we are in the back end of economic expansion, it is a good time to review your portfolio asset allocation. Keats and Chris review the SECURE Act, and some of the tactics to protect personal and inherited retirement accounts.

In the interest of starting an organized and healthy new year, Chris welcomes Maryann Murphy and Jessica Riley-Norton. Maryann. a frequent public speaker and professional organizer, shares time management and goal setting techniques. Jessica, owner of EVOKE Yoga, discusses the various types of yoga, and how they can restore our bodies, and improve strength and balance.

Chris reviews key financial indexes and stock performance for 2019. Last year’s numbers were good. Corporate earnings will need to rise for the economy to stay strong – right now the data is a mixed bag that we will need to continue to watch. Stay invested and revisit your asset allocation to right-size your portfolio if needed.  Chris also shared financial housekeeping tips to address at the beginning of the new year.

Chris welcomes Attorney Keats Boyd to talk about the SECURE (Setting Every Community up for Retirement Enhancement) Act, a series of rules that modify how retirement accounts are handled. Some extend the age in which for IRA contributions can be made or requirement minimum distributions must be taken. Others have more adverse effects, that can possibly be minimized with proper planning. Chris, Brian, and Scott from AMR discuss financial news including Brexit, China Tariffs, impeachment and the upcoming election, the Santa Claus Rally and Window Dressing, and Roth IRAs.

Chris welcomes leadership members from the MA Financial Planners Association. Their goal is to help foster good financial planning work with each members’ respective clients. Chris and team talk about financial year-end planning, and SEP IRAs as retirement savings for small businesses or self-employed individuals.  

Chris welcomes Dan Smith, Owner of Smith Family Popcorn. Dan talks about how he transitioned from being an architect in Boston to starting up the business, as well as how their delicious products came to be and where to purchase. Chris and team recognize the 78th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and discuss U.S. trade issues and how political matters affect the markets.

Chris talks with Mary Lou Palumbo, Executive Director of the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce. Kristin O’Malley, President and CEO of Cape Cod Foundation (CCF), talks about charitable giving. For 30 years CCF has handled the back-office side of philanthropy so donors can make sure funds go where desired in the most effective way. People do 70% of giving during holiday season. Individuals can give IRA qualified distributions and/or appreciated assets directly to charitable organizations to manage tax consequences.

Chris welcomes Mike Arrone, Chief Investment Strategist for State Street Global Advisors. Mike talks about the three things investors have to be grateful for: Fed easing of monetary policy (rates, repurchase market, and treasury bills), low inflation has allowed companies to grow, and US consumer confidence remains high. Economic expansion ends if central banks tighten monetary policy too aggressively, but current inflationary pressures have allowed companies to grow. Wages are growing at 3%, almost double the cost of living, equating to U.S. consumers contributing to the market. A pickup in jobless claims could be a sign of U.S. consumer confidence decline. Investors are looking for strong earnings next year due to corporate profits and improvements with U.S.-China trade negotiations. The past decade and year was a good market for investors (only decade w/o recession).

Chris welcomes Mark Skala, President of Cape and Islands United Way.  Mark discusses how the United Way and collaborators are working to improve educational access and mentoring for youth, programs to help seniors age healthier and in place, and homeless housing and transition planning programs.  Cape and Islands United Way manages collaborations with local partners and 100% of donations stay on the Cape and Islands.

Chris welcomes Special Sheriff Jeff Perry from the Barnstable County Sherriff’s Office, serving as co-host on today’s show. Joining them is Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos of the Yarmouth Police Department, who discusses his 40-year career in law enforcement after recently announcing his retirement.
