Earlier in the week, you got Jason and Adam, and for your Friday episode of Filibuster you get Jason and Ben! The two first talk about D.C. United’s 3-0 victory over the Columbus Crew SC, and we first talk about the excellent play of D.C. United’s two center backs. We also talk about how the first half wasn’t as bad as people thought, how Bill Hamid’s game was just as impressive even though it wasn’t flashy, and the way D.C. United scored their various goals. We then spend a long time talking about who from this game will get rested for the Toronto FC game, before taking a break to properly talk about Saturday’s game. We invite on Duncan Fletcher from The Vocal Minority to talk about Toronto FC. We talk about their three straight draws, and how, despite their stars, they are a defense first team this year. We ask Duncan about the non-American view of Jozy Altidore and try and figure out which goalkeeper will start against United this weekend. We finish by talking about Jonathan Osorio and a #10, trying to puz

Ben is too busy smoking delicious foodstuffs on his grill to join the podcast, so it is just Jason and Adam for the first of two episodes this week. First, the pair break down D.C. United’s satisfying 4-1 victory over Orlando City SC, including discussing Taylor Kemp’s great game, United playing direct and attacking without going Route 1, and how different this team is than the D.C. United of June. They also talk about Julian Buescher stepping in for Marcelo Sarvas as well as Nick DeLeon’s debut at right back. In the second segment, Jason and Adam discuss United’s attempt to get their first back-to-back wins this year against Columbus Crew SC. Jason breaks down what is going right for Crew SC with their two straight wins coming into Wednesday’s game, and they discuss what was going wrong for them before that. They talk about who will play the #10 spot with Federico Higuain injured, ponder whether Crew SC’s style has evolved in the past two year, and end by trying to pinpoint their weakness and find a way that

Filibuster is back and sounding delightful in your ears! Jason, Adam, and Ben (who finally fixed his audio problems) are back to talk about D.C. United’s late late draw with the Chicago Fire. We talk about the late goals and how surprisingly lackluster United’s midfield trio of Marcelo Sarvas, Luciano Acosta, and Rob Vincent were. We also talk about how Steve Birnbaum has become a target option, and how that isn’t sustainable before discussing who should play right back for the upcoming matches (hint: not Luke Mishu). We end by talking about Jose Carranza, the D.C. United Academy, and youth development in general. We then invite on Michael Citro from The Mane Land to talk about United’s upcoming match against Orlando City SC. We talk about their two consecutive losses and what Jason Kreis’ hiring has brought to the team. We dicuss the addition of Matias Perez Garcia to the attacking trio and what that means for Brek Shea’s place on the team, as well as all of the designated players that OCSC has and if they c

It is our 200th episode! Jason, Ben, and Adam are here to bring you the 200th installment of Filibuster by talking about D.C. United’s miraculous 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls. We talk about the comeback and the wing play of Lloyd Sam, Patrick Nyarko, and Lamar Neagle, before breaking down how the central midfield did without Luciano Acosta and raving about how much of a weapon Steve Birnbaum has become on set pieces. After the break, we talk about D.C. United’s upcoming game against the Chicago Fire. We ask what’s been going on with them since we last met, and how they will have David Accam back after his flirtation with going to France. Finally, we break down the three ways they attack and point you back to our previous episode on the Fire if you want to hear us gameplan them. Finally, we bust open a 200th episode Twitterbox! We answer questions about how long Luciano Acosta will be around, our recommendations on where to sit if you come up to RFK for a game. We compare Jalen Robinson and Kofi Opa

The Filibuster crew is all back together, and Adam, Jason, and Ben have to talk about the disappointing loss against New York City FC. We talk about how hard this one hit and how well it was going until the 79th minute. We have to break down Luke Mishu and the other defensive breakdowns as NYCFC was throwing everything they had at United, and also how infuriating United’s missed chances were in light of how the game turned out. We end the segment by talking about Jalen Robinson and a little bit about Chris Penso. We then turn our eyes to the other New York team, the New York Red Bulls. We talk bout their recent results and the disappointing emergence of Sacha Kljestan. They have some suspensions to deal with (as do United), and we break down what D.C. United midfield we want to see in the absence of Luciano Acosta. We end by talking about how to gameplan the Red Bulls, which specifically includes some needed creativity from United’s wingers. Give it a listen!

Filibuster is back and still has plenty of games to talk about. Jason, Adam, and Ryan talk about D.C. United 6-2 dismantling of the Chicago Fire, and have to talk about Patrick Mullins and Luciano Acosta. We talk about what else there was to like about the win as well, even if it was against a 10-man last place team. Finally, we talk about Steve Birnbau, Lloyd Sam, and D.C. United’s set piece resurgence. We have to talk about the USMNT’s game against St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday, as the USA continues their march towards the Hex. We talk about the chances of Steve Birnbaum starting in this game and remain puzzled by Jurgen Klinsmann’s roster selection. Finally, we move onto D.C. United’s Thursday night game against NYCFC. We talk about how they will deal without Ronald Mataritta and how that will affect how they build from the back. We also ask whether or not D.C. United should take this attacking mindset on the road, and how they should gameplan for NYCFC. Give it a listen!

  • Silent Goodbye (Jason)

    27/08/2016 Duration: 01h11min

  • Special: A discussion about race, gender, and inclusion in American soccer culture

    11/08/2016 Duration: 52min

A few weeks ago, the New York Times Magazine ran what has become a notorious piece in American soccer cultures. That article, by Jay Caspian Kang, we think, was an attempt to start a conversation about race and ethnicity and diversity and inclusion in the stands at professional soccer games around the U.S. We aren’t the first to say that Kang’s piece failed to spur that conversation. So we’ve decided to try and have part of what needs to be an ongoing, nationwide discussion here. This is a podcast episode entirely about that. Adam, Jason and Ben aren’t in this episode — the three of us don’t really have any experiences as nonwhite or nonmale fans. Instead, Donald Wine II, who writes for Black and Red United as blazindw, is hosting this episode and talking to other fans of color about their experiences at MLS games, women’s pro soccer games and United States men’s and women’s national team games. The episode starts with Donald and Rick the Blasian (who also writes here at B&RU as BlasianSays) discussing th

The Filibuster team is united once again, and Jason, Adam, and Ben are here to talk about D.C. United’s 2-2 draw with the Philadelphia Union. We talk about whether or not this is the turning point of the season, and have to keep talking about how the finishing needs to improve and how United is shot shy. We talk about how the game changed with the subs of Julian Buescher, Lamar Neagle, and Kennedy Igboananike, which also was around the same time Ben Olsen got sent off. Finally, we talk about Rob Vincent as a defensive midfielder and what we want to see against Portland. To help us preview the game against Portland Timbers, we bring on FourFourTwo USA’s Richard Farley. We ask him about Portland’s win over Sporting Kansas City and Porterball versus Bennyball. We have to talk about how Portland is yet to win a road game this year, and how they will try and win their first without Diego Chara. We talk about their new defenders, including Vytas, as well as the new forward line pairing of Jack McInerney and Fanendo

Filibuster is back yet again to fill that gap in your ears. Adam and Jason fly mano-a-mano to break down D.C. United’s 1-1 draw with the Montreal Impact. We talk about how we felt about the game, whether this looked more like a 4-3-3 than a 4-1-4-1, and the performance of Patrick Mullins. We have to talk about Luciano Acosta’s day, and whether the draw wipes out all of the positives of the game. We then bust open the Twitterbox to talk about MLS’s national broadcast policies. We then bring on Evan Villella from Brotherly Game to break down the Philadelphia Union coming to RFK Stadium to face D.C. United. We analyze and must-win game for D.C. United and ask Evan to gameplan the

Filibuster is back, and does not recommend you listen to Jason’s story that opens the podcast. Ben and Adam are here too, and we have to talk about D.C. United’s destruction at the hands of Toronto FC. We talk about how bad Jared Jeffrey was and how D.C. United let the game get out of control from the very beginning. We apologize for waking up Sebastian Giovinco, and talk about Luciano Acosta’s performance. We end by talking about the lack of anyone being able to cross, and some transfer rumors involving D.C. United players. We then talk about the upcoming game against another Canadian team, the Montreal Impact and Didier Drogba. We talk about him and about Ignacio Piatti, how up and down their defense has been, and if United can do anything to break them down. Give it a listen!

    19/07/2016 Duration: 01h10min

The Filibuster podcast is back and Ben is off of the injured reserve. He joins Adam and Jason to talk about D.C. United versus Columbus Crew SC, including what we made of the clash of styles. We talk about D.C. United’s high press, the red card to Harrison Afful and whether or not Marcelo Sarvas will be suspended, and the debut of Lloyd Sam. We end by talking about just how much D.C. United really needs a striker. We bring on Kristin Knowles from The Vocal Minority to help us preview D.C. United versus Toronto FC. We talk about the funk that Sebastian Giovinco is in, and what it feels like for TFC to have a good defense. We have to ask about their loss to 9 man San Jose, and the youngsters that Toronto has had to play these past few weeks. Jason has to ask about Maryland product Tsubasa Endoh, before Ben asks about Jozy Altidore sneaking back onto the bench. We try to offer Tally Hall to TFC (and everything breaks down), before talking about the new BMO Field and how to gameplan the Reds. Give it a listen!

We hope you had a wonderful Fourth of July, and now you can enjoy a Filibuster to take the edge off of this week. Jason, Adam, and Donald are here to put some D.C. United into your ears. They end the show by talking about this weekend’s game against the Philadelphia Union. Give it a listen!

Another week, another Filibuster for your ears. Jason, Adam, and Ben talk about D.C. United’s 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution and how fun it was. We discuss the midfield trio and how Fabian Espindola can play with them. We heap praise on Jalen Robinson, and ask whether or not this formation change will continue past this game. We break open the Twitterbox to answer couple of questions: the difference between good Alvaro Saborio and bad Alvaro Saborio, who Dave Kasper might target in an MLS trade, the continued transfer rumors surrounding Steve Birnbaum, and how many points are required from this road trip. We then welcome on Matt Montgomery from RSL Soapbox to talk about Real Salt Lake. We talk about their difference between home and road form, their US Open Cup lineup, and Burrito Martinez. He tells us he’s fine with RSL spreading the goalscoring wealth, talks about Justin Glad and Yura Movsysian, and Kyle Beckerman. We end with asking Matt who will be on the field given the US Open Cup, and how

    21/06/2016 Duration: 01h13min

It is a USA gameday, and it is a Filibuster listen day! Jason, Adam, and Ben are back to talk about a couple of D.C. United games and the USMNT. We start with the two most recent games, the US Open Cup loss to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on penalty kicks and the 0-0 draw to the Houston Dynamo in MLS regular season play. We talk about our feelings about these two results, as well as the lack of creativity shown across the field and what they can do better. We talk about D.C. United’s formation, the debut of Jalen Robinson in MLS, and, of course, we have to talk about Chris Durkin. We then talk about tonight’s USMNT matchup against Argentina, including the changes Jurgen Klinsmann is going to have to make to both his players and maybe to his formation. We take this opportunity to crack open the Twitterbox as well to talk about potential throwback jerseys for D.C. United. After the break we bring on Kyle McCarthy of the Boston Hearld to preview D.C. United’s upcoming game against the New England Revolution. We

Despite D.C. United not having a game this past week, Filibuster is here for you throughout this MLS break. Ben, Jason, and Adam are here to talk about the Copa America Centenario, in which the USA have won their group. We sing the praises of John Brooks, chastise DeAndre Yedlin, and gawk at the fact that Bobby Wood was played in his correct position for a bit in this game. We also talk about the USMNT’s lineup going into the game against Ecuador, especially with Yedlin out. We then talk about a real live D.C. United game that you may or may not be able to watch unless you are at the Maryland SoccerPlex this Wednesday. United take on the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in US Open Cup play, so we talk about why we love that tournament and what lineups we want to see. We walk down memory lane with all of the former D.C. United players on the Strikers, and ask Jason to preview what we should expect from them. After the break, we bring on Alicia Tolar of Dynamo Theory to talk about United's weekend game against the Hous

Even though D.C. United is off this week, the Filibuster crew is not. We have to talk about the very disappointing Seattle loss, much as we would like to forget it. We talk about whether or not this trend of play over the past few games worries us, and talk about the play of Luciano Acosta versus Fabian Espindola in this game. We then spend a good chunk of time talking about what we want to see United work on during this break, to hopefully take advantage of the very poor Eastern Conference and rise to the top. We then bring on Kevin McCauley from SBNation.com to talk about the Copa America Centenaro. Just like in the first segment, we have to talk about disappointment first and the USA. We talk about the ridiculousness that is Clint Dempsey as a center forward, the defensive breakdowns across the team, and weather Darlington Nagbe should start. We discuss why Michael Bradley didn't do well in this game, and whether DeAndre Yedlin is playing bad or being asked to play bad. We look forward to Costa Rica, ask K

With a game this Wednesday, D.C. United is back on their regular Tuesday to help you get all the info you need. Jason, Ben, and Adam start by reviewing D.C. United's 1-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City, and start with the wonderfulness that was Alhaji Kamara's goal. We ask whether the team we saw in Philadelphia and Kansas City is true D.C. United right now, and we show some love to the return of Bill Hamid. We end the first segment by talking about Luciano Acosta and Fabian Espindola and what the latter has to do to fit in the with the rest of the team. We transition quckily into the Copa America Centenario, which starts this weekend. We ask whether or not the United States are going to be OK and talk about, of course, all of the players that Jurgen is playing out of position. We get out of the segment before we get too mad at Jurgen, but we truly do want him to confound us and do well at the Copa. Finally, we bring on Dave Clark from Sounder at Heart to preview United's midweek matchup with the Seattle So

Have no fear, your weekly recommended dose of Filibuster is here. Jason, Ben, and Adam are back to talk about D.C. United and hope that things get better. We talk about D.C. United's 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union, and have to start with the goal that did them in. We talk about how the team has no natural finishers on it, and talk for far too long about the non-issue that was Luciano Acosta being subbed off. We talk about Alvaro Saborio and Steve Birnbaum being called up and what that will mean for United, and then talk about the transfer rumors swirling around Birnbaum. We then move onto this Friday's (yes, three Fridays in a row) game against Sporting Kansas City. We discuss whether or not this is the same old Sporks team, and whether Peter Vermes' shouty message is beginning to fall on deaf ears. We talk about the players that they will be missing for the Copa America, what their game plan will be, and whether or not they can beat D.C. United on set pieces. Give it a listen!
