Who do we bow down to? Sometimes the pressure to bow down to certain ‘idols’ is so intense it feels like we are “under fire” but even in those moments, allegiance to God will pull us through.

Wisdom is derived from God. Daniel makes the decision to align with God rather than the king as the source of sustenance and identity, and as a result is deemed “the wisest of them all” -- to which he credits God alone, and which we will explore next week.

The attempt to acculturate Daniel and his closest friends, and their unwillingness to deny their Jewish identity, is both the context of the book of Daniel as well as the moral of the story. What does it mean for us to be God’s people in a strange and foreign land that demands our very identity reflect its values?

What Daniel says is important really because of who Daniel was – a person who listened to God and remained faithful in the face of great adversity.

Despite our best efforts to the contrary, we are all victims of grace. That is, even when we don’t want to be transformed, or not too much at least, we are changed by Gods love.

Transformation may be something that happens to us, but often, it is something we allow to happen. Paying attention to holy moments and allowing ourselves to be changed by them is the first step.

Everything we do, including generosity, is about discipleship. The foundation of what we do is to invite people into a deep and abiding love of God (the great Commandment). We give generously to further the kingdom mission to which we have been called - making disciples.

Jesus calls us to follow, not watch, Him. As believers, we all have a part to play in the grand story of God and the ushering of His kingdom here in earth as it is in heaven. Join us in this glorious adventure.
