  • 74. Sam Freeman: "Dookie" by Green Day

    23/04/2021 Duration: 01h18min

Sam Freeman visits the Gateway to talk about the album "Dookie" by Green Day. Sam explains how, as a preadolescent in Ottawa, Canada, the alienation expressed in the album reflected his burgeoning feelings of being an outsider. And then ironically when he moved to Berlin it was that same music of alienation that helped him make friends, create art, find a girlfriend, and most importantly belong. Along the way he and Howard talk about the other titans of mid-90s California Pop-Punk and then they share songs that make them feel a satisfying feeling of being sadly in love. John Wilson stops by The Gateway to have a chat with Howard about jamming. Over the course of 90 minutes they explore the emotional and intellectual power of jamming as a tool for connection, self-discovery, and having a blast and Howard explains how those jams led to the creation of Gateway Music. Along the way they talk about scary album covers, the Godfathers of Funk, and how Pete Townsend was secretly the drummer in The Who.
