Synopsis
In this witty early pastiche, Lovecraft adopts the voice of the eighteenth-century moralist Dr. Samuel Johnson, who claims to have survived far beyond his own century. Written in a deliberately archaic style, the piece presents Johnson's reflections on the passage of time, the decline of manners, and the strange progress of modern society. Through his dry humor and learned indignation, the tale gently mocks both the Enlightenment's confidence in reason and the modern world's obsession with novelty.
