Is Xi Jinping’s government losing its grip on the people of China? Even as protests simmer down, the impact may remain. Some COVID measures have been ostensibly loosened. The blank paper protest tactic, in which citizens hold up blank sheets of A4 paper with no message on it that signifies a message everyone in China understands, according to Yaqiu Wang, a senior China researcher with Human Rights Watch: “because everybody is fed up with the COVID restrictions, everybody is fed up with no free speech, no rights, with the Communist Party’s rule”.
