A North Carolina man is attempting to save the McLaughlin Planetarium from being demolished as the University of Toronto expands. The planetarium was opened in 1968. Jeff Balmer, an architecture professor and a former Toronto resident, who now works at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, has fond memories of visiting the building as a child. He claims that visiting the Planetarium when he was young played a big influence on his life. “The building is a fantastic example of mid-century architecture. It’s a real masterwork and it would be a terrible loss for that building to be demolished,” he told CityNews via Skype on Tuesday. “The city ought to have a major planetarium like it did in the past. [Toronto] is the largest city in North America without a significant planetarium,” Balmer said. While the building does present a historical significance, declining attendance at the McLaughlin Planetarium caused it to close it's doors in 1995. The University of Toronto Jeffrey Balmer joins us today on the
