But James says that's not the "scam." The real problem is that the people who sell these calculate an annualized return and project it out over 30 or 40 years. They show you these compounding growth charts and suddenly, when you're ready to retire, boom, you're rich. But there are two big problems with those calculations. First, no one can really tell you what you're going to be earning on these investments and all too often the projections are way too aggressive. And secondly, and this one is really important, they don't tell you about the taxes you're going to have to pay when you want your money back. And then there are the fees.
