Synopsis

German-born Hildegard Westerkamp studied flute and piano at the Conservatory of Music in Freiberg before emigrating to Canada in her early twenties. After completing her music studies at the University of British Columbia, she joined the World Soundscape Project at Simon Fraser University under the direction of R. Murray Schafer. Her involvement with this project not only prompted deep concerns about the encroachment of noise and the general state of the acoustic environment, it also changed her thinking about music, listening, and soundmaking. The newly founded Vancouver Co-operative Radio provided an invaluable opportunity to learn about broadcasting and ultimately enabled her to produce and host her weekly program, Soundwalking, in 1978/79.
