Culture does an excellent job at projecting man’s supposed limitless capabilities; that we can accomplish anything. But the proof reveals that we can’t stop destroying ourselves. The cross is counter-cultural because where culture says “Save yourself!” the cross says “You can’t!” And then it goes ahead and does it for us. That is the beautiful paradox of the cross.
