Moses wants to know God’s ways clearly. God however does not provide this information. Instead, Moses is shown God’s glory – the presence of the God, who will be gracious to whom God will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom God will show mercy. The knowledge of God’s ever-presence shifts us away from the need to know exactly what to do since the God who has chosen to be gracious and merciful to us is with us. This frees us to live faithfully as best we know how. God fully gives Godself to us but reveals Godself to us only in amounts we are able to handle at the time.
