In the first part of chapter 10 of John’s gospel, you find two different parables told by Jesus: one beginning at v. 1, and another at v. 7. Although, at first glance, they appear to be alike in content with the image of a shepherd and his flock, some clear differences are, in fact, observed. "I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep (John 10:1-2). This is the beginning of the first parable. If you are to interpret it allegorically, the “thief and robber” would be Satan, and the “shepherd” would be Christ. Keep in mind that the “sheep pen” has a “gate,” and many sheep are inside the pen. Note that the shepherd “enters” by the “gate.” The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they kno
