And while no one knows who first put chicken and waffles on the same plate together, we do know the meal was a staple of both African-American cooks and the Pennsylvania Dutch. The traditional Pennsylvania Dutch version consists of a plain waffle with pulled chicken on top, covered in gravy...and the African- American version uses fried chicken on a waffle served with butter and syrup.  The sweet and savory combination is simply delicious...and easy to make
