Synopsis

On International Women's Day 1917, what is known today as The Feb. Revolution began,a process that would result in the end of the Russian Empire, which had been extant for hundreds of years. Lagging far behind his European allies, the Romanov emperor had been able to hold onto the ancien polity as long as he possibly could, barely conceeding to supportive Liberals and reformers. As a result of his actions (and lack thereof) almost all the population had lost hope in the Tsar by 1917 and the Russian Empire was no more. In this episode, Professor Rinita Mazumdar & philosopher Luke Ford join me in discussing the background of the Feb. Revolution-- What where the weaknesses in the Russian Empire? How could autocracy exist there for so long? Could the Tsar have avoided being deposed somehow? And what role does Feb. play in what lay ahead-- the rule of the Bolsheviks?
