Synopsis
Sex addicts and partners of sex addicts can have mental illnesses that complicate diagnosis and recovery. One of these mental illnesses is borderline personality disorder, or BPD. BPD is commonly associated with sex addiction and makes sex addiction much more difficult to diagnose and treat because the criteria for both diagnoses overlap. BPD is considered a severe personality disorder often caused by cumulative trauma experienced in early and middle childhood. Carol the Coach will interview Geoff Goodman who not only is a CSAT but a proffessor of psychology. He will be explaining some of the symptoms of BPD which include frantic attempts to avoid abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, and impulsivity, which can include self-injurious behaviors and sexual promiscuity. It is important that mental health professionals screen for BPD when they assess sex addicts and partners of sex addicts.
