In 1970 Oba Oseijeman Adefunmi I and a hand full of Cultural Nationalist, left the urban temples of N.Y., Chicago and Indiana,ventured into the swamps of the South Carolina Lowcountry and built the Kingdom of Oyotunji. Thus reclaiming the Culture and Traditions of the Yoruba ancestors and deities. Forty years later, North America’s oldest, authentic African village still stands. Each year throngs of people from all walks of life journey to this tiny Village that, " just wouldn't die." The large temples, museum style tour and monthly festivals were designed to inspire and display the Culture and Religion of the African descendants in N. America. The village residents live in a group of simple structures, wear colorful West Africa garments and provide spiritual counseling and religious training for individuals seeking to rediscover the culture of their ancestors.
