Bill Caputo was a professional wrestling referee. He officiated numerous bouts in the square ring along with two oversized sweating behemoths in venues from Sunnyside Gardens in Queens to Madison Square Garden in ManhattanHe officiated at matches that included wrestling’s royalty — Bruno Samerteino ,Hulk Hogan ,The Rock,The Ultimate ,Warrior among them. Caputo’s career highlights included between-games matches at major league ballparks, including Shea Stadium, and the first Wrestlemania at the Garden. Caputo didn’t grow up dreaming about being a wrestling referee, however. Like so many of life’s turns, this was the result of a progression of events beginning with an accident that nearly cost Billy his life.
