The Tufts Get Going! "Politics and the Polis"

Synopsis

9 am Eastern, Thursdays, "The Tufts Get Going!" host Rosanna Tufts: "Politics and the Polis." Did you know we get our word for "politics" from the original Greek word, "polis?" The ancient Greeks had the idea that citizenship was a sacred duty. We are not merely citizens of a society, but of a cosmos. The ideals of a citizen were laid out in Aristotle's "Nicomachaean Ethics" . . . and have been revived for a modern audience by Gwendolyn Reece in a talk she gave at the Parliament of the World's Religions! She joins me this morning to discuss how we can embody these citizenship qualities in our own lives. Hint: "Scholae" is a big part of this -- the time that is NOT preoccupied with the busyness of life. How you use your Scholae, determines your character. Does our society provide enough meaningful opportunities to develop this? If not, what can we do about it? (Rescheduled from an earlier time slot.)
